Subaru Outback that is.

Bought new in 2007 - now 98k mi
Front inboard CV boots split at 37k
On my third battery (alternator checks fine, only 30mA of parasitic drain)
Clutch release bearing seized yesterday ruining the pressure plate

I expected this to be a trouble free car. I guess I'm headed back to Fords.

The batteries seem a little excessive but everything is literally maintenance items.

The axle boots should've lasted about 2-3X that long. Usually the right side goes first, since it's right over the exhaust.

Other stuff doesn't sound typical from my experience. For example, I just replaced the battery in my mom's 2000 Forester last year.

The first Subaru I ever had towed home (after hundreds of thousands of miles driving them) was my 06 STi, and I've had a few other problems with it since then, so I'm guessing it all went to shit around then.

I suppose it's relative. If you bought a recent BMW you could be on your third high-pressure fuel pump in under 40k...or, your engine could've blown up at 15k because of machining errors in rod bearings. Your entire cooling system might be on its second or third replacement by 60k. {shrug} If that's all you've had done in 100k of driving I'd say that's (a) average, overall but (b) below average for Subaru.

The more they break, the more the BMW fanbois seem to love 'em. :?

Well Vincent, it is the ultimate driving machine, you think its easy to make the ultimate driving machine AND making it reliable? A few costly repairs here and there are a small price to pay to experience the ultimate.

I guess you are right. I mean, it's a lot to ask for a car to be expensive and reliable.

Thanks for commiserating :)
I guess having six registered vehicles, I was hoping to minimize the upkeep. Especially since we don't flog this one - then again maybe we should start. :D

i'm sorry VK, (and the octopus ink cloud that feels the need to fall in behind your opinions) but in case you didn't get what Pete just said, let me paraphrase............. Fu** Off, i don't remember any of us anywhere ever insulting any car brand on these here forums. other than, well of course the BMW haters. good for you, segragated succinct opinionated bullshit that no one really asked for. give it a rest or buy a BMW and bitch like an owner rather than a blogger............ BTW bloggers are a thing of the past in case you haven't heard yet.

Yeah VK, you insensitive SOB. Steve just had to bail on his BMW race car to drive a Ford instead. Talk about salt in the wound. Show some respect for his loss will ya? The nerve!
