Riddle me this...

My Subaru needs to be jumped started (sounds like a dead battery, right? Read on.) The weird thing is that I can drive all the way home and the car runs perfectly fine. However, when I shut the car off, it won't start again.

I had the battery tested, thinking it was a bad cell or something, and it tested fine.

Additional information to help your diagnosis...about a month ago, the speed sensor for the speedometer died. And most recently, the starter has been acting weird. Like it isn't getting the full amount of juice needed to push the bendix all the way out.

I don't know if any of those problems have anything to do with each other.

I did a search on NASIOC, but they can be as worthless as teats on a hog.

So I am baffled as to what the problem could be. Any help is appreciated.

My STi developed a problem kinda like that. Dead battery, jump started it, fine. Started fine next time. Dead battery again. Jump started. Ran fine. Dead again a few starts later. Replaced battery so it would stop dying. New battery, fine, then dead. Jump started, ran fine. Started fine most of the time, then dead, didn't jump start, nothing. Eventually figured out the switch that's attached to the clutch pedal that tells it the clutch pedal is pushed down was sticking (it was randomly unsticking when I attached the jumper cables). I cut the wires, twisted them together, taped them, now I start the car every time, and don't have to push the clutch pedal. There are two switches, one on bottom is for cruise control, one on top is for starter.

If this is not it, then maybe your battery ground wire is corroded. Had that problem a few 2.5RSes ago.

Oddly, I has almost the exact same problem on my WRX and it turned out to be a loose and corroded battery clamp. Check it first! Would only fire when the jumper cables actually squashed the terminals a bit... Ended up replacing a perfectly good starter until I figured out the clamp was fubared...

What does the starter sound like when it "won't start", and what are the dash lights doing when twisting the key?

The clutch switch? Interesting. I'll play with that some later this week. My cruise control has never worked because the switch on the clutch doesn't contact anything. It looks like there is supposed to be a stopper or somthing on the pedal that isn't there. Maybe I'll fix that also while I'm under there.

I'll play with the battery cables also. The starter just sounds like it isn't quite meshing up with the ring gear. Like it isn't kicking out all the way. The dash lights dim when I turn the key like the battery is dead. But when checked, it is fully charged. :weird:

Thanks for the suggestions guys. If you think of anything else I could check, let me know!

Assuming the battery was load tested as healthy, then Mike's suggestion about a bad battery cable connection at the battery is number 1 since the starter is apparently getting some power. Other locations to check are the other ends of cables since corrosion can happen there also. Note that a "fully charged" battery based on the charger or a volt meter is not necessarily a healthy battery.

Good call Dick. I took the battery to Advance Auto and had them put it on their tester. All looked good after the test.

I'm going to check the cables, ends, etc. when I get home tomorrow. I was beat today after riding 32 miles today and 28 yesterday. It is a little early in the season to be pulling 60 miles in a weekend!

Todd,

Sounds good. Now you get to find the actual problem. :(

The only time I've had a battery load tested it literally could not start the car afterwards. Fortunately Autozone had the battery I needed in stock . . . since we were in their parking lot on a cold night. I my case I had already repaired the battery cable so a new battery solved the "about to strand us" problem in the nick of time.
