Good news....all of my glow plugs were tested and I still have one that works (out of 8). No wonder this thing is hard to start. That kind of explains the R-R-R-R-R-Sput-R......

My "BRAKE (!)" light is stuck on. It's in the parking brake mechanism - the one that University Ford "repaired" in such a way that it fell off while they were bringing the truck out to the waiting area. I probably shouldn't be too surprised. :? It's something to do with either the pedal mechanism, or the switch that turns the light on. It flickers, and when that light comes on, cruise control disengages. Very annoying.

I'd take it back to University Ford and complain, but I'm afraid they'll make something worse, and/or take several days to do something they claim will only take a few hours.

Yeah....Thanks for the inspiration Bret. I did it and saved a bunch and it was a lovely day to boot. Part of what had kept me from fooling with the truck glow plugs was the weather. When you really need glow plugs it is because the weather is not pleasant. This weekend was shaping up to be wonderful and Advance Auto had a 15% discount Internet coupon coupled with $9.99 glow plugs. The other thing that had been discouraging me was the close proximity of the heater box to the passenger side valve cover and the fear that it would be impossible to get the darned thing off. As it turns out the driver's side was much more difficult to service than the passenger side. There was more room around the heater box than there appeared, and the driver's side had the air intake to the turbo to remove, plus the firewall was much closer to the hidden valve cover bolt at the rear. It took a little more than 4 hours, but part of that was due to dropping bolts onto the gravel driveway. If anyone is contemplating this it would be very helpful to have a 1/4" drive 10mm deep socket to remove the glow plug. Of the three 3/8" drive deep sockets that we have, all were just a tiny bit too big around at the drive end to easily clear two of the rocker arms. I finally ground a generous bevel on the drive end of the socket to help with getting it back out of the engine. The socket would "snap" into position just under the rocker but would not come back out. I probably could have bumped the engine over to change the position of the rocker arm, but I chose the hard way at the time.
Regards,
Charlie G

Sweet!

Good news Charlie!

Judging by the cranking time on my truck, I'll probably be doing mine again soon.

I definitely remember needing a 1/4" drive socket to get to the plugs, and I'm going to try the fuel hose trick to see if I can spin them out that way once they get cracked loose with the socket.

Definitely the hose trick was sweet; you can spin them out much faster. I think the hose I had was about 1/8" ID. If it wasn't dark and the hose in the back of the truck I'd go measure it, but you could just pick up a good size when you get the glow plugs. I did try one slightly smaller bore hose over just the small part of the connector, but it didn't have enough grip to spin the plug. The hose needs to go over the entire connector and be difficult to get on and off or it will slip on the oily plug.
