Cheaper/easier to replace. You have to get that big long f-ing bolt out of the knuckle and lateral links but then it is cake. Take the 32mm axle nut off and pry the inner joint out of the diff.

Thanks for the feedback James. We endured the cold and replaced the axle on the street today. Working in freezing temperatures really throws a damper on my automotive enthusiasm.
Much easier than I imagined since my only other experiences were the Sentra SE-R and an Audi 5000. This one was cake. The only hassle was realigning the lower struts to the hub, but that was minimally offensive.

I've rebooted some Subaru axles, and it's not that difficult for the inner boot. And it's about half the cost of a new (rebuilt) Autozone axle for the boot, clamps and grease. I've never done an outer boot.

My assumption was that Pete's axle was already popping and clicking and not salvageable without actually rebuilding the CV portion of it and not simply cleaning, greasing and rebooting. Granted, rebuilding the joint itself is not terribly difficult, but axles are not that expensive in the scheme of things.
