Can you pass NC inspection with a TPMS light on?

I've passed with mine on.

Granted, I take my car to a place that passed my coworkers car that had a broken E-brake cable (which it should NOT have passed with) but I'm pretty sure this is not a requirement to pass.

Somehow, I doubt it is supported in the OBD2 protocol.

Thus, a piece of black tape should work just fine. :)

James,

Did you find some lightweight wheels locally or are you just going to buy new?

Neither. Just going to have them removed so no shop gives me the "you need $40 worth of TPMS rebuild kits" for us to install your tires. Will just get rubber valve stems installed instead.

Who can't replace your tires without breaking your TPMS? That's ridiculous.

i heard somewhere that THSCC has a sponsor that does tire replacements. Mark maybe?

and of course Jeb's boys are competent also according to what i read here.

anyway James. Mark personally swapped two RFTs on the wife's sedan yesterday. if it wasn't done correctly i am sure i would have been well aware of the mis-step by now. 8)

no thats not it, a set of sensors would run you in the hundreds of dollars, that is more than likely some BS seal kit or something that they jsut wanted to up sell

I don't remember the exact price, but it's not hundreds of dollars. I bought a complete set for my wife's new 2010 Honda Pilot just recently, and it was under $200 to get them and have them installed and tires mounted and balanced (we have two sets of tires/wheels we swap for various purposes and I didn't want to have to swap sensors).

Ding ding ding. $40 to replace 4 orings. If they aren't leaking when I get there, they shouldn't be leaking when I leave unless the installer f-ed up, in which case they should replace them for free.

Just to chime in on the TPMS thing. It is something we offer we do not require. You can change tires on a TPMS equipped vehicle without breaking the sensors. However, and the the reason it is recommended, is mainly to prevent corrosion. The rubber gromment on the inside can age and deteriorate and corrocion can build between the lock nut and the valve body. Most manufacturers recommend that you replace those components at the time the tires are serviced. Again a recommendation, not a requirement.

Another consideration, is that the shelf-life of the batteries that run the sensors is about 4-5 years. We are already replacing "dead" sensors a couple of times a week. Lucky for our customers our sensors are a lot cheaper than the dealer and we can reprogram them into the car for you as well.

Just my .02

I'm not sure about this, but I'm under the impresssion that our '05 Mini wathes the ABS wheel sensors and reports a tire pressure problem if one of the wheels is consistently spinning at a different speed than the others. It sometimes gets thrown off when changing to and from race tires, but it's easy to reset and otherwise works pretty well.

What's the advantage of having a complicated system with wireless transmitters in the wheels?

The indirect systems are far easier to deal with than the others.
