blasting my wheels

i decided to paint my wheels. i sanded with 400, then 800, then steel wool, then two coats of primer, then two coats of paint, then 2-3 coats of clear coat...and damn if the paint won't peal off with my fingernail. i used krylon wheel paint...i'm not pleased

so now i have to take this stuff off and start over...anyone know who in the area can blast these wheels...i'd like to take them down to the metal.

So we tell you to use Dupli-Color because it holds up well and you use Krylon? Are you Dan Durusky or what?

How long ago did you paint them? Lots of paint takes months to fully harden. Trick is to bake the wheels in an oven at 200F for an hour or so.

+1 on the duplicolor wheel paint. works great.

Please tell me that you were painting steel wheels because it is a bad idea to use steel wool on aluminum wheels because small steel fibers become embedded in the aluminum and then start corrosion cells.

As far as using Krylon for painting wheels goes, the only folks who have recommended using Krylon have been racers because the paint is very brittle and will not stretch and cover a beginning crack; therefore the cracks show up sooner.

As far as your experience with the paint scraping off soon after painting,....what Mike says. Some paints take a long time to reach full hardness (usually they are enamels).

and somehow Chris this is different than the brake fluid / garden hose thingy? wheels are a disposable expense.

they've been drying for 4 days. i can't get them in an oven unfortunately.

After I bought Ryan's old OZ wheelers from Michael, I decided to blast and repaint as well. I could really use a larger tank, blast for 20 sec and wait a min for the tank to recharge....frustrating. But the blasting is done and took about a day to knock out. Original paint on those wheels was tough to get off.

I went to pepboys who generally have a great selection of duplicolor paints. Duplicolor has now changed there marketing. All of the cans are now car color specific and only sold in a 8oz can at 6.50-7 bucks per can. That sucks. You can't just buy a bright color can of paint. I'm not a big fan of this move.

I went to Lowes and they have their Valspar brand in a 12oz can for 4 bucks. Bought 2 cans of a deep red and went to town after I had primered the wheels. I have to say they turned out pretty darn good and should add a little bling to car. I'm sure the new paint will improve my times

. I'll let them bake in the sun for a few days and then hit them w/ some clear. You TIR guys need to watch out at the NCAC, I'm gunning for you now! :wink:

Be sure to hit them with a Scotch-Brite pad before you shoot the clear. If the paint is fully cured the clear won't adhere without some 'tooth'.
