Does anybody have one that they can lend me for a weekend? My waterpump needs to be replaced and I need something to hold my crank in place.

I know I said you could use my garage. However, I've changed my mind.

I've changed three of them and never needed a tool, well unless you consider Ryan a tool.

Yeah, just starter bump it with a 2+ foot breaker bar on it.

Why does mazda have to use the most ridiculous fastener sizes on the miata....23mm and 24mm on the rear diff, 21mm crank bolt.

If you are wary of the starter bump method, you should be able to crack it loose with a cheater pipe and a buddy standing on the brakes with it in gear.

IIRC, unless you plan to replace the seal behind the crankshaft pulley you don't have to remove the bolt. The pulley is held on with 10mm bolts that are easily removed. The pulley then slides off exposing the gear for the timing belt.

I think you are right, you can slide the timing belt off the cam pulleys to get it out of the way of the water pump. I'm not sure if you can get the belt past this guide without removing the 21mm bolt:

If not, then the bolt would have to be removed (I'm assuming Andrew is replacing the belt since you mind as well given how close this job is getting to replacing the belt.

Why couldn't Honda do that on the B-series!?

That guide slides right off when the pulley is removed as well.

These pictures are from a 94, but the crank pulley attaches to that guide and the 21mm bolt holds the guide to the end of the crank:

Maybe later 1.8L are different.

It's been awhile, so I might be remembering it incorrectly.

No worries, I'm not a miata owner....just have two friends with 00 NBs so I've just browsed the timing belt job just incase they want me to do it for them. So I could be full of it myself :).

Seems the 1.6L don't have that guide so soon as those 4 10mm bolts are out you can slide the belt right off the timing pulley (as in the 4 10mm boltss go directly into the timing pulley). On the 1.8L the accessory crank pulley bolts to that guide via the 4 10mm bolts and the guide is held to the crank via the 21mm bolt. Again I can't see based on that picture if you can slip the belt around that guide without removing it.

I think Andrew has an NA, but not sure if it's a 1.6 or 1.8.

You need to save your energy for helping me with my Yellers. j/k

This thread reminded me that it's time for a belt and waterpump change on the IS300. I think I'll wait until the fall weather comes. It's brutal out there in the sun.

You need to buy some front strut housings so we can get those suckers hacked up and painted bling yellow :).

I had a *REALLY* good link to an i300/2jz timing belt walkthrough but the link is dead now :(.

Oh I'm totally going to rock the school bus yellows on the donors. At the very least it'll help them sell when I eventually get rid of the babyhauler (sadly this decision depends on how tire hungry it is this & next year).

I have some sick obsession for one of these as a family sedan. Someone help me!

I really need to make a WTB post on 8th Civic forums for the struts. ...ooops /hijack
