According to Lee Grimes at KONI, school bus yellow IS KONI yellow. So you made a good call on the paint.

What would you guys use to strip it quickly and does a good job. I'm not sure if they come painted or powder coated from the factory.

Aircraft stripper does a fine job, (paint or spray) but wear gloves and goggles. Best to apply stripper outside also. Scrape it with a putty knife or similar after giving it 15-30 minutes to work. I scufed the original paint with 60 grit sandpaper to give it a headstart. When finished, You MUST clean the surface with a detergent (like Purple Power) and make it completely dry before applying primer, should you choose to go that route.

Obviously, I'm more concerned about the final appearance of my car painting adventures than others. Different strokes, which is fine. I'm sure if you went with the engine enamel proposed by others that it would do OK.

That aircraft paint stripper is called MEK. It is pretty serious stuff and outlawed in many states. Fortunately, you can still buy it in North Carolina. At Lowe's. Have fun with that!!

I'm just going to go with what I have. That picture on the previous page was primed over the paint and sprayed with duplicolor enamel 3 times and he's in Montana and the finish is holding up :).

not true...it's worse!

Dichloromethane and methanol...yum! DO NOT use indoors. Just don't.

MEK is fun stuff in its own right, though...It was used in prepping my gas tank restoration to de-varnish the inside and is a main solvent ingredient in things like RedKote.

So it was nice and dry tonight. Sanded them and sprayed some of duplicolor's own primer on them and they dried super fast. I I wet sanded them 2 hours after spraying (can says 30 minutes and they are sandable).

Going to let them hang overnight and might start the coats of yellow tomorrow night.

Do you have access to an oven that can get smelly? Makes a world of difference for paint hardness. 1 hour at 200F is like a week or more of normal paint curing. Will lessen the chips and scratches when you install....

Generally the reply would be "The wife would kill me if....", however I'm the cook in the house so I probably wouldn't put a painted car part in my oven :), particularly since it's gas. Geeze, now I need to add a oven for the garage to the list :). Thanks for the advice though.

The inserts aren't going to get here till the first week in July so they'll have plenty of time to dry.

With the weather we are having, just put them in the sun for a day and the paint will be baked on!
It is supposed to be 101 here today and 98 on Sunday for the autocross. Start drinking now. I mean water Remchak!

3 light coats, 15 minutes apart:

Image

There are spots where you can see the 'roughness' of the primer so I'll probably let this dry a few days and wetsand with some 600 grit paper and repeat 3 more light coats.

EDIT: I don't think it's roughness from the primer...the texture on those parts is like sandpaper and if you rub your finger across said surface, the roughness breaks off. Hmmmm....maybe painting outside in 90+ degree heat is making the spray droplets/mist dry before hitting the surface (the surfaces in question are horizontal ie the underside of the the spring perch).

Yeah, it does seem darker than I was expecting. Particularly if you look at the picture on the previous page but I used the same brand and shade of paint as that person used. Maybe the flash that picture used?

EDIT: Definitely the flash, check this out:

The fuzziness makes it look like it is drying too fast. Does the duplicolor enamel dry fast in general? If so then yeah it's temperature related. Stay out of the sun with fast drying paints. I have definitely also seen that effect when painting in high humidity but it is usually more localized.

Again the nice thing about Rust-O is that it will flow and make for a nice shine. The engine enamel stuff still seems to be a good middle ground for gloss and fast drying.

FYI I think rustoleum also makes School Bus Yellow.

I ditched rustoleum...after it dried (finally), I sanded it smooth and laid down a few coats of Duplicolor's white primer....sanded it and cleaned it again and started on the Duplicolor School Bus Yellow. After hearing negative things about rusto and how you should use the same brands primer, I jumped ship.

After they dry for a few days, I'm going to wetsand them and clean again, then on a relatively cool day (say 85 deg :) ), pull the cars out of the garage and close the door and do the final coats in the garage (it was hot AND windy yesterday making spray painting a PITA).

Egads, is this worth all that trouble?
