need to remove the e30 trans fill bolt, it's a 17mm internal hex (allen). there isn't room for the socket + 1/2" drive wrench so i have to use an open ended wrench on the bare socket. but it's so tight i can't remove it by hand, even using a mallet. anyone have an extra long 17mm wrench that i can borrow for an afternoon so i can get more leverage? the closer to north raleigh the better. thanks

Use a pipe over the wrench. Or if you have a spare torch light, take it apart and use the tubes. They fit over a 17mm wrench... ask me how I know.

Also, FYI you should be able to yank the 17mm hex shaft out of the socket which will allow you to use the box end rather than the open end of the wrench. I had to whack on my 17mm hex socket a few times for the insert to loosen itself from the socket part, but it will probably come free.

with some careful positioning of my body under the car and a shitton of force i was able to loosen the plug, but thanks for the tips. i knew i was low on trans oil - it took 3/4 quart and still didn't overflow (but it was close enough so i sealed things up). thanks for letting me borrow your mtl pump - worked like a champ and made the fill much easier.

I've been known to use a big box wrench over the end of a smaller wrench for additional leverage. Obviously (if you try it you will see why) CARE is needed but it can work.

I have done this many times... and have the scars to prove it!

I have a 7/8" open/box end wrench that I have never used for anything other than a leverage tool. It's size allows the box end to fit over the handles of ratchets and wrenches.

Has Stephen been driving all over the RTP area secretly over-tightening all the bolts on cars? :P
