I know that your rear end needs to stay stock but is there anything that says you can't change gearing within the tranny.
The reason i ask is that the od (5th gear) in the T-5 is pretty weak.. I know there are some kits out there to maintain RPM's from 4th to 5th.
Now that I think of it, do you ever hit 5th with 2:73 gearing?
good luck, I'll probably be PMing you within a year about who you choose, as this seems to be a weak link within these drivetrains..

Unfortunately there is no wiggle room on the drivetrain:

Eligibility
An OEM T-5 transmission that was originally offered in a model year 1987-1993 V8 Mustang must be used, unless otherwise specified by these rules. Standard ratios must be maintained.
Alternatively, a Tremec (part#3550 or TKO500) or T5Z (part #M-7003- Z) may be used, but only with the following ratios: 1st gear 3.27, 2nd gear 1.98 or 1.97, 3rd gear 1.34, 4th gear 1.00, 5th gear .68. or a Tremec T5Z (part #M-7003-Z) may be used. Transmissions must be
unmodified and gears may not be shaved, polished, trimmed, or otherwise changed.
I have only hit 5th on the long back straight at VIR and even then it was only for the very last section.
The T5 really is a the weak link. as I have found out is the standard T5 casing tends to flex under high g-loads (especially tight right handers). This can cause the edges of the gears to wear or the 3-4 fork to warp/bend. I am pretty sure it was the latter on mine leading to full failure.
The T5Z and the Tremac seem to fix the issue with better casings and front and rear brace plates.
