I literally have 10 rotors that I need turned. 6 mustang fronts and 4 from the E30 with the ruined paint job.

My guy upped his prices last year and is now charging 30 bucks a rotor to turn them down. Does anyone know someone local who can do it a bit cheaper? Better yet are there any club members who would have a rotor lave and are looking to make some money/beer?

many thanks

Wow $30 to turn them... That is what a new rotor cost for the Miata.

Why not just replace them?

Sorry, can't help much- but I have noticed that not many places offer to turn rotors anymore. Autozone used to do it for $5 per, but they got out of the business a while back.

I think most other places learned that it cost more than $5-10-15 for them to do it by the time they add up the costs of the employee to put the rotor on the lathe and monitor it, plus the cost of buying and maintaining the lathe and the potential liability for turning a rotor too thin or somehow screwing it up, so they either bumped the price up or got out of the business altogether.

As for the E30 rotors, new ones are available for like $20-25 each, so no sense in wasting time or money on turning the old ones (unless you find a place to do it for like $5 each).......

Carquest will turn them. Not sure on the current pricing.

Of course, the last time I had a set turned, they mounted one a little bit crooked and added some nice run-out, so I needed a new rotor anyhow.

Carquest charged me $20/rotor last time, and screwed them up. I'll never turn a rotor again.

Quality Brakes on E. Chatham St. in Cary may still do them. It's been a few years since I had them turn rotors for me, but the price was reasonable ($5-10, IIRC) at the time. Might be worth a phone call if Carquest doesn't work out.

try Loop Road auto parts in Garner. They were usually cheap, but it's been years since I've had one turned....

I can turn rotors if I have access to a machinist lathe. This reminds me that I need to renew my techshop membership and actually go there this time and/or teach some classes.

Thanks,

I'll try a few of those shops.

I might try to buy new E30 rotors, as the costs are comparable... the car is sold, now I need to get it up an running!!

As for the mustang... I have to stick with Stock for now, and a new rotor/hub assembly is well over 100 bucks/rotor. So i've picked up 2 sets of spares at the yard to cycle them in when I warp the fronts, typically 6-8 25 minute sessions or 4-6 AV lapping sessions....depending on the time of the year.

Thinking of adding ducts, with the stock front fog light inserts... But I've got to get this E30 out the door first.

thanks again
jake

i had the napa shop at six forks and falls turn my nsx rotors, i think it was $15 each but they cost $300 so it was worth it. for cheaper rotors i don't know that i'd bother, especially for severe duty use.

Last I checked (in Garner, not Durham) they were paying ~$8.00 per 100# for most steel. If you have a huge load of just brake rotors or similar, they should pay a bit more.

Rumor has it that the price of scrap metal is on the way up, demand is greater than supply right now by a decent margin. I guess the Chinese have to fill up all those empty Wal-Mart shipping containers with something on the return trip back to China.........

;)
