If they give you a 7 year B2B warranty, knowing you're autoXing it I say that's a great deal and a strong endorsement. Best of luck with it this year!

Thanks. Hopefully they don't end up regretting it ;) - AB

I think you're retarded but it has nothing to do with the car. :D

But seriously, good luck with everything and it will be fun to watch you and Bryan try something totally different.

I've been watching this thread myself, so Aaron, I hope all goes well w/ the purchase. I do have a stupid question though. What's a "ringland" and what problem does it cause when it fails?

It's not a stupid question. This is the first time I had ever heard of this. It is when a piston ring is a little too tight in clearance and causes too much heat. The ring cracks and causes blow by with oil high oil usage. You'll go from about 145 psi (stock compression in good range) to about 90 psi on that piston. - AB

Does the lean condition have anything to do w/ this failure?

Yep, that's what I'm thinking! :)

Then Johnson Subaru won't be telling you that you voided your warranty because of the sway bar or me changing my own oil :).

Potentially. The odd thing about this car is that there are hundreds of people that have no issues at all with the car. Even '08's without the nitride crank that have 40 - 50k miles on them and haven't had even a hiccup. It's really strange.

I think that Subaru is going to dump this block/engine in 2011 and they are just trying to make everything hold together for another year. - AB

You guys installed a quad-stacker in the RV? I'm not even sure what that means but count me in anyway! :)

Are you driving out or doing a fly & drive? I should probably sign up sometime soon.

Hey, if those used AST's don't work out, I may have an extra $750 credit towards a new set hanging around.

Ring "lands" are the relatively thin area of piston that remains below the ring groove after machining the groove. Combustion pressure on the rings is resisted/supported by the ring lands. Too much pressure (typically detonation in a turbo car) and/or too much heat (they happen together since too much heat results in detonation and/or piston melt/weakening). Lean mixture relative to the boost/timing contribute/cause the issue. That is one reason why "going lean" is a MAJOR no/no with boosted engines. "Lean" in those conditions causes more heat and/or less cooling from the fuel.

FYI, I should clarify a couple of things since Subie engines have horizontal movement. "Below" means in the crank direction. The ring lands in jeopardy are the ones between the ring closest to the combustion chamber and the next ring in the crank direction.

Not really. I'm not going to bankrupt a casino, I'm going to bankrupt myself with this car :P - AB

Ok big boy. If Bryan can't make DC and the seat is open, it's yours. - AB
