I think you need a 1977 Bandit edition Trans Am, with the big fire-breathing bird on the hood. And a pair of those Yosemite Sam "Back Off!" mud flaps.

Yeah, that would be like, cool and stuff. :D

The big fire CHICKEN.... haven't seen one of those in a while and don't forget the CB antannae.... or how ever that word is spelled... Better own a gas station for that, it uses more gas than it could ever think of producing Hp

Tom, Think LT1! A Z-28 like Mike Johnson's or Karen Krause's, or maybe a caprice if you want tons of space (huge back seat and trunk). You can actually find several LT1 caprices near by and in good shape for well under 5K. Most of the Z28's are around 5-6K or more. :)

So I considered all the suggestions, but went back to my snobby side and today I'm looking at a 1992 (E36) BMW 325is. Its stupid cheap and looks to be in decent shape from the pics. Apparently it has an issue grinding into 1st gear 1 out of 3 times, but I would be picking this up for WELL under my $5000 budget, so a $500 tranny swap would be no problem.

Thanks for the help and hopefully this car isn't a POS

Tom,

Just out of curiosity is that $500 tranny new/rebuilt or is this price range for a used one which is hopefully healthy? If not new/rebuilt, what price range are new/rebuilt tranny's?

Thanks,

I think Tom is probably on his way back from picking up the car :)

He and I talked about this car and the trans - $500 is about the least expensive you can find a used one for on car-part.com for a 92-95 325i.

These cars have really reliable transmissions, so it's surprising that the one Tom is looking at has a problem. But it also means that used is a pretty safe bet.

Mike,

Thanks. Sounds like someone had a habit of downshifting without much appreciation for the fact that syncros are a "friction wear item". Good to hear that the transmissions are generally reliable since I'm sure new ones or rebuilds are significant $$$. I'm not in the market, but you never know what the future holds.

So I got it! Miranda used her mad negotiating skillz and talked this guy into a seriously stupidly low amount for a 1992 BMW 325is. The car is in great shape (other then the tranny). The leather is good, everything works. There is a little bit of trim missing on the left side of the bumper, but he included a new OEM piece for free with the car. The motor pulls strong and idles perfect, also the suspension seems fine as the car is VERY smooth on the street and highway. I also took some fast offramps and it felt great. There is absolutely no 1st gear in the car, so the new (used) tranny will have to come sooner then I though. Even after the tranny and even if I choose to have it installed by a shop I will still be WELL under the budget :D
