My dad passed away this summer and I am curious if anyone can explain the NC estate tax laws. Yes I know I need to talk to a professional (referrals welcome), but I am curious as to what (if any) inheritance taxes I may have to pay and when. Has anyone had to go through this recently?

I found that same info, but it’s not helping me much. It probably will make sense once I actually understand what they are trying to tell me. I appreciate that they list the relevant general statutes and discuss the apparently convoluted history, however a layman version of that would go much further with me.

In short, it's not clear to me if you do or do not pay NC state estate tax if you are under the $3.5 million federal limit for a death in 2009. And if you do pay, how much do you pay?
