Well the president of my company has requested that I find a nice green venue for our 2010 residential wooden playground catalog shoot being held in Raleigh next month on a weekday or two. Our market is really the only one that is conducive weather-wise so I get the joy of being the project manager.

So, I need to find a flat, open, grassy area with large beautiful trees and few obstructions in the background to shoot.

The only ideas that come to minds are:

- a local public soccer field (the city probably will be a pita to get clearance)
- a local state park like Beaverdam or Jordan Lake
- a residential backyard that is space friendly (he did mention a $200-300 compensation)
- a local country club, although I think the liability issue will play in

So, that being said, if anyone has any creative ideas (or a big 'ol backyard ;) )I'd be forever in your debt. If you have an idea or contact person so get my foot in the door at a place that would be suitable, I have a nice 12'er of your favorite seasonal with your name on it.

thanks,
Matt

Here's an idea of what we've used in the past:

Matt, try Fred Fletcher Park. I lived across from there for a lot of years and it would fit the bill. The Raleigh Parks department should have contacts for you. I know they have held Jazz festivals there every Sunday in the summers and other things like that, but I bet their fee would be nominal if not free.

If you don't know where it is, it's on the right when coming down Glenwood from Five Points towards Peace Street. - AB

shoot, i drive past 4 or five fields like this on my way home...to fuquay...just go drive out in the country some where and ask the land owner...shouldn't be a problem.

Matt,

Are you talking about building the set at your venue? If thats the case, how about renting a studio and having the photographer shoot against a green screen then subsituting in backgrounds?

Any good photographer should be able to do this without it being obvious. it will also make it so you only have to get permission from the city to use their tree's, no building or setup would be needed for the background.

maybe your already taking this approach, but it wasnt very well spelt out in your post.

Bond Lake has several baseball fields, as well as a large open field where they hold outdoor events.

The field that I think would work best is the big open spot right in the middle of this map.

Thanks for the help fellows. Jason: I didn't even think of Bond Park, the middle area would be awesome. Brings back memories of cross country running in high school.

I'll have to check out Fred Fletcher as it's right near my house. Also, the studio idea would be ideal but I think they're trying to do the job "on the cheap".

I'll second Fred Fletcher. We were actually married in the amphitheater there. From what I remember, which, to be honest, isn't much, the City was really easy to work with. The fact that you want it on a weekday should make it even easier.

Sure. You could do that. But as Matt said the cost is going to run even higher once you factor in studio space rental and the post processing and stock fees for a suitable background.

Bottom line is that it's just more work and more money for a product that, at its best, is just as a good as a well thought out location shoot.

What, you and Fred? That's weird, but not like there's anything wrong with that.
