Excellent point. It's like cellphones making watches obsolete. Heck, they might make *calculators* obsolete, too. They're gonna be software apps, not hardware.

I'm like you with the air thing...I do the same thing. It's funny how many people get that look of "oh no, I think this guy is gonna yell at me for something" and they are all like "oh, thanks! I'll check it next stop!"

We have the technology...someone should push for cellphone companies to add a "talk now" button to phones. Push it and it scans for some short predetermined amount of time for another phone that's had the same button pressed in bluetooth proximity (it's 30+ feet, and most phones have it now) and when they link it just opens a talk session. That way you don't need (or get) a random strangers number, but you can initiate communication with the wave of your phone. Would definitely help in situations like this.

eating lunch at vir yesterday, chatting with a (older) guy sitting next to me. someone called his cell phone and the ring tone was literally that - a ringing bell just like an old mechanical phone. i thought about how people younger than <insert some value> won't understand the significance of that.

just this morning my wife asked if i "taped" mad men last night, even though we've had tivo for five years. i wonder how many examples like this we can come up with...

The only way you are taking my watch is is you can pry it from my cold, dead wrist.

NEVAR!!!!! Watches will never die, at least in my world. A watch is the ONE item of jewlery that a man can wear and change for his dress. I'm at about 10 nice watches right now. In Vegas I made the mistake of going to the watch store in Ceasers Palace. Holly Cow, what a store! If I'd won gambling instead of loosing (which is very easy to do by the way), I'd have a Hamiliton Ventura on my wrist right now.

I went into the same store Rodney. The whole kid in a candy store thing comes to mind. I have about 25 watches in my collection. Everything from an ~1880 pocket to the Victornox watch I got for being with Landmark for 10 years.

Mine would be an Omega Speedmaster if I won in Vegas.

Oh make no mistake, watches are obsolete for their intended purpose. Sure, those who have formed habits will still wear them, but we'll die off of that. The only thing that will be left will be those who choose to wear them as jewelry.

My Tag and Rolex qualify on the jewelry front, but I almost never wear them any more. I have a Citizen, strangely enough, that I wear fairly often still. It's way more collectible than my Rolex or Tag, too, as one of 1500 made. It's also the most useful given that it keeps way better time than the other two and never needs winding or a battery. Plus it has a stopwatch and other cool features. But nothing my cellphone doesn't have....well, other than my undivided attention.

I want a Dick Tracy wrist watch radio or a Star Trek "badge". Tracy's was rather large but that was "old cartoon technology . . . not something that could be done with modern technology). Something small, light, rugged, and not very expensive (I'm a nerd . . . watches are not jewerly to me). Cellphones either need to be in a pocket or a belt clip, neither of which is as easy to access as a wrist. :D

I have a affinity for watches as well. So far I have only succumbed to one expensive watch (well two, I had a Tag for about a week wasn't sure if I wanted it after I got on an auction site through work at a steal so I traded it on my first BMW bike-salesman thought I was nuts but told him to ask the owner, got my money out of it). My wife always encourages me to buy something when we are on cruises but the only thing I have gotten is a Citizens Eco Drive, after Donnie's post I decided to get it out and wear. It's dead. Thanks Donnie, I blame you. First you get the 917 of my dreams then you somehow kill my watch. What have ever done to you?

Since this thread is the epitomy of "de-rail"...

Literally this week, Dawn gave me a Swiss Army Victorinox watch for our anniversary. She got it at less than 50% of the normal price on a jewelry store closeout sale at one of the shops in the NorthLake Mall over here just north of Charlotte. It is a little heavy for my liking, but an extremely nice watch overall.

Cline,

You are not alone... I have at least four watches at home that have dead batteries.

Same here, including my "Nice watch"

Even my dead reliable Timex has finally used all of it's batteries. I really want to get a Kenetic watch of some sort, one with a Chrono on it.

and secretly I have always been a fan of TAG watches.

You know why you are probably a fan of Tag's? The opening of Lemans Steve Mcqueen drives into the village of Lemans and stops his 911 opens the door and props his arm with this Tag Chronograph on the door. I have letter in Grassroots publishished on this theory. True stuff. I thought it was a Rolex Daytona so I bought a Rolex (not daytona couldn't affort that). Now I feel like I have to have a TAG but can't pull the trigger.
