OK, save my marriage. How do I get the contents of my wife's Ipod into the itunes library on her new laptop. all I keep getting is that the ipod can only be sync'd to one itunes but she does not want to be on my itunes on my computer (thus the marriage problem)

Windows or Mac?

There are utilities that will do it, but it isn't as easy as you might think.

In Apple's eyes (or the record labels), you are trying to pirate music. You will have a copy on your computer and a copy on her computer... IF you can do what you want, then you could also just loan me your iPod and I could make a copy too.

If it were me, I would copy the iTunes library from your computer to hers, and cut the iPod out of the transaction.

Do you have a PC?

Step 1: throw itunes in the trash

In the past I've used ephpod. Using ephpod you can get all the music on your iPod back out. It will name everything coming out based on the id3 tag of what is currently in the ipod. You can select what order to arrange the tags to create the file name and folder structure. I could help walk you through it if you like.

Which iPod do you have? My old 4th gen ipod worked great with it, as did my wife's nano. Unfortunately my iPhone forces me to use itunes. I assume it runs much better on a MAC as it is terrible on a PC. I haven't searched around, but it would be nice if I could get rid of iTunes some day.

I've done this a few times and never had an issue (Windows OS). When iTunes on copied to computer loads, I recall that it found all the songs and added them to the library (or whatever they call it).

If her iTunes already has music in it, then it can be a bit more involved. For example, what I did above was just go to My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music and copy that whole directory to the other PC. However, you have either accept/decline overwrites for all the subdirectories if she already has some artists that you do. Hence if that's the case, you'll have to decline them and then go in and copy in the artist content (it's stored by album name, so you may have to even go down yet another level into an album if it already exists) individually for any duplicates.

Having a fileserver makes this all pretty quick and easy, but you could also burn a DVD with the iTunes Music directory contents I suppose.

Thanks for all the help, i'll tackle this this weekend, my wife wants to use this as an excuse to get a new ipod. Yes, I know that doesn't solve the problem in the least but reality is not a restraint when it comes to shopping.

If you still have the files from the other PC or laptop, just copy the files onto a disk and transfer them into your music folder on the new computer, then import into iTunes. You'll still need to sync up after you do this... and I'd recommend "de-authorizing" the other computer if possible once you're sure you got the files removed.

It's not a perfect system, but it'll get most of what you need (assuming you still have access to the raw files.)

I've got my collection currently on two different PC's and did it this way.

in process of doing exactly this, I have to be careful not to "corrupt" her music with great jazz and certain rock n' roll.
