Oh noooooo, this is the beginning of a downward spiral for the club!!!! Next thing you know, everyone will be getting on the bandwagon for "point and shoot" racing, LOL. I know this is not the "forte" of the club, but you may find it interesting.
All kidding aside, for years Dawn and I drag raced in local club events, Fun Ford Weekends and National Mustang Racing events when we lived near Chicago and have occassionally missed it. Weekend before last, several of us when down to zMAX drag strip in Concord, NC for the NMRA/NMCA race. We entered our two Cobra's in the True Street event on Sunday and had some fun. We used to run this class a lot, but it has been over two years since either of us were on a drag strip.
Here is how this class works:
- Proof of current registration and proof of current insurance
- Pass an inspection for lights, horn, blinkers, etc etc
- All participants must complete a 30 mile cruise prior to racing
- All participants must complete three back-to-back-to-back 1/4 runs with minimal cool down in between
- Once you leave the parking area for the cruise, you are not permitted to open the hood, add air to the tires, work on the car, nothing. You can drop air pressure in the tires and you can add ice to an intercooler if you have one after the cruise ends. Other than that, touch the car and you are out.
- You must make the 30 mile cruise and all three runs
- The 3 runs are averaged together for your time. They pay the fastest driver, the fastest runner up, and then the closest to (but not going over) the 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 solid seconds. So, someone with a 12.99 average would lose to someone with a 12.01 or a 13.01 average.
- Class payouts are $100. The person that spends 60k on that 9 second car gets the same $100 as the person with their 14 second daily driver.
It was extremely hot that weekend. At least our 30 mile cruise was around Lowe's Motor Speedway instead of the local roads. I say this because there was no stop and go like you get when you go out across the country side. In our non-AC equipped 99, that would have been even more murderous than it already was. Surface temps on the drag strip were at 130*.
Dawn took a few easy runs in the 01 Vert and won the 15 second Class. She won $100, a very nice plaque and a TV interview. They had Dawn, our youngest daughter and I in front of the convertible and asked Dawn and our daughter a few questions. From what the guys said, they are pretty certain that everyone in the True Street class will be covered in the program, so we may be able to see some of the other runs, the other cars and the cruise around LMS.
Per the schedule here,
Home, the program will air twice:
09/06/09 Sun 11:30 am EST -- Transmission Tech Corp / True Street Class -- zMAX Dragway, Charlotte, NC
09/07/09 Mon 4:30 pm EST -- Transmission Tech Corp / True Street Class -- zMAX Dragway, Charlotte, NC
What I don't know is which network. There are several listed at the top of that page. Either way, I think we will eventually be able to see it on the following link:
