True, but they make a shitton of nuke power.

BTW, to take wind out of the sails of the oil baron type sentiment and such, I would strongly encourage everyone to FORGET about pricing commodities (with a world market) in dollars -- especially crude oil. Price them in Euros, Pounds, Aussie dollar, etc. Don't continue to fall for the dumb media blather that 100% ignores the world value of our dollar (which has been going down a steep slope for over 20 years). Want a nasty but "world-realistic" look at the current state of the USA? Price the S&P 500 in Euros since the 2000 market top.

last 20 years huh?

let's see 12 years of Bush / 8 years of Clinton. 60/40 by my math.

i'd just like to be able to put some money away to retire on. devalued or not. it spends green in Costa Rica.

Well since 1985 actually (remember the German gray market imports? :)), and trying to assign blame to a President is only a few steps short of the asylum. Step out of the media-induced hysteria that drives this country long enough to realize that this is a country induced problem of always wanting to pay the piper at a later date. It's easier to buy votes now by mortgaging the future of our country. The really sad part is that it will likely take a forced discontinuity to change it (i.e. a failed government note/bond auction and huge devaluation of our dollar) someday. Hence the reason that you can choose to look backward to blame some party or person for some personal reason, or you can look forward and be part of the solution for a better future for our country.

I read that bond sales for the stimulus are not going very well. I can't imagine why...

Last week's auctions weren't too bad really, but few realize we're monetizing our debt (devaluing the dollar) since we have the Treasury on one side of our government selling billions of new bills/notes/bonds in these weekly, monthly and quarterly auctions while at the same time we have the Federal Reserve bank buying notes and bonds on the open market (yes, this is government manipulation of the world market for US securities that prior to the past three months was actually a free market). The world knows that the market is now rigged in our Treasury securities...one of the reasons that the liquidity of those markets is way down (the 10yr T-note used to be the deepest, most liquid market in the world).

Don't we just have to look at Medicare, Medicaid and the Veteran's Health Administration to see how "well" the government does at running stuff?

I'm guessing you know the answer. Trust your gut, use common sense coupled with a voracious appetite for additional personal education. The sense that this is all WAY bigger than any one of us is easy to feel. There is one contingent that says align oneself with and go with the flow while being prepared for the waterfall however.

I wasn't trying to set you up. I was really looking for your ideas on how to improve the situation of this country. For your last statement, I agree with that, but to me, that's not really a solution as much as it is a plan to survive the fallout. I'd prefer to not see the fallout, although, based on recent events, it doesn't seem as it we're moving in the direction of a long term solution.

They made a good point on the news about this this morning as well. The original amt budgeted for this program was supposed to last until October, and instead lasted about a week.

Not exactly encouraging if health care is the next thing on their list. The bill there will be a lot bigger, and its a bit more of a crisis if they run out of "surgery money" than "junk perfectly good cars" money.

Man it feels good to say I threw my vote away. . .

Jason, I think the way to make a better solution for the country is to jsut start getting the government untangled from things. The transition may be painful, but everything they have touched has been a disaster. It would obviously have been much better if they had just followed the Constitution in the first place, but eventually things will start to become more sane if they stay out of things. Capitalism>socialism, lets tip the balance of the country away from the latter and back towards the former. Lets stop thinking this is a damn democracy and realize its a republic. Those guys who started this country had a couple good ideas. . .

So what would *you* do with $4b to reduce greenhouse gases or improve our country's energy situation? If it was yours to spend?

Nuclear power plants.

As much as I would agree on this. The typical answer is NIMBY. So we would never actually get one built. Even the solar panels and windmills get poo-pood by people. They are unsightly...

I'd throw that $4b into buyback incentives for Heat and AC units for homes. You get a big rebate for trading in your 5-10-15 year old unit. Those things run on peoples homes day in and day out. Replace them with more efficient units and drop the overall load on the grid.

OMG THE WORLD IS NOW SPINNING IN REVERSE. I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH GRAHAM ON THIS.........

Since our government is going to spend huge sums anyway, and if we had the ability to direct funds in this manner like Mike says, what other areas of consumption could benefit from ideas like the above?

What about refrigerators? I've not followed that industry closely, but I suspect a modern mid-to-high end fridge is a lot more efficient than ones made 20+ years ago.

Hot water heaters? Perhaps there's enough efficiency improvement there to warrant major inducements to replace units older than xx years?

I don't know, think of anything that is attached to the power infrastructure in this country (electric or nat gas) I guess where the end consumer can be induced to upgrade now with a product that will produce significant on-going savings. If the government is going to spend it anyway...

I think Chuck is right on, but to add to it, the thing you can do is CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVES AND LET THEM KNOW HOW YOU FEEL. Start watching for bills coming to a vote, educate yourself about them, and send emails to YOUR representative who will be voting on them.

Strangely enough, they don't get much feedback, but they do listen to what they get. Overwhelm them enough and they will actually start to vote with the way they think will get them re-elected, and that is with what their contingency is screaming. A screaming contingency is generally a voting contingency. Piss them off and you lose. Sure, special interests and lobbyists can make things happen we don't want to see, but they can be beaten. Really they can. We just have to rise up and do it.

at congress.org you can actually sign up for "mega-vote" where you can get email alerts about upcoming bills, and how your representatives voted. Since signing up, I have repeatedly confirmed my hatred of David Price. There are also really easy ways to contact your representative there as well.
