Ford Confirms Four-Cylinder EcoBoost Engine

Ford confirmed what car watchers have known what was coming all along from the blue-oval brand: A four-cylinder engine with the power of a six

2009 Ford Escape SUV: Insiders say Ford's new, twin-turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing more than 200 horsepower will first show up in the next-generation Escape SUV (2009 model shown). Ford Motor Company

Ford's already said its twin-turbocharged Ecoboost V6, offered in the company's Taurus SHO, offers the power of a V8 with the fuel economy of a six. Now, take that down two cylinders. The company confirmed at a Dearborn press conference this morning it will build a four-cylinder version of its Ecoboost engine. Following on the company's engine calculus, that means the power of a six-cylinder engine with the fuel economy of a four.

The new Ecoboost will produce at least 230-horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque, from a displacement of 2.0-liters. Edmunds says the Ecoboost may show up first in Ford's next Escape SUV, though the company hasn't announced anything yet, and there's no word on mileage ratings. What's next, a three-cylinder engine with the horsepower of a five, or does it only work with even numbers?

spec Fiesta? That could be some good weight-to-power...

Nice torque curve! I don't think Ford is breaking new ground with this technology - direct injection and turbocharging - the BMW 335i is already there. The difference is that Ford is doing it in the mainstream $20-35K price range, and they're diving in with both feet.

That said, the pessimist in me says to wait and see if there's a rash of coolant leaks and engine fires due to rubber hoses failing due to heat exposure.

IIRC Ford still has a bit of a relationship with Mazda, (the Fiesta is based on the Mazda 2) and their 2.3l Direct Injection turbo 4 cyl in the Mazdaspeed3 is a pretty fun iteration. 265 HP in a 22-25k 5-door wagon is a great purchase, IMO. The 2009 model had some significant torque steer, but Mazda says they have improved that for 2010. So, I bet F's engineers have some foundation already established for their application in the EcoBoost4.
