Just wondering if there are any decent alternatives to Roadrunner for high speed internet access. I've been w/Roadrunner/TWC for a loooong time and would like to drop it, at least for awhile, mainly because I hate their customer service, but also because dropping it would give me the opportunity to take advantage of TWC's new customer discounts in the future (if I decide I'm willing to trade discounts for service). My kids play some pretty bandwidth intensive on-line games, and from what I've heard, DSL probably won't cut it for that stuff. A forum search came up with Earthlink as an alternative, but it sounds I'd still be dealing with TWC's customer service - correct?

Any other choices?

Earthlink just used TWC infrastructure. Look to see if UVerse is available in your area. They are rolling out slowly across the Triangle.

I have earthlink. Whenever I call their technical service line, I get forwarded to TWC.

I have AT&T's dsl 3meg option. When i was in charlotte, I had their 7 meg option. in both cases, bandwidth never affected any of my online gaming... atleast not anymore than it would have been affected if I was using roadrunner. (i believe cable has more issues than DSL on a theoretical basis with the shared median)

Actually I would think that DSL may work as good or better than Cable for gaming. Most DSL vendors offer different tiers with respect to pricing and bandwidth.

I am most likely going to be switching from Earthlink (via TWC) to Verizon DSL (naked DSL that does not require phone service) within the next 30 days or so.

I just recently learned of Verizon FiOS, which is apparently blistering fast. I tried using Verizon's "Check Availability" thing on their website, but I'm not a Verizon customer, so it didn't recognize the address and failed. Anyone know if it's available?

Verizon FiOS is not available in our area that I am aware of.

U-Verse is ATT's version of FIOS.

I just switched from Roadrunner to ATT's 6MB/sec DSL. Download is screaming fast (runs around 6.8MB/sec on speed tests). Upload is so so at about 500k/sec.

I don't do any online gaming, but the speed increase is incredible. - AB

No FiOS in Durham. Based on the pending sale of the local Vz territory to Frontier it will probably never happen here.

If people post prices and speed of their service, that might be more helpful:

Roadrunner 768
.768Mbs down
.128Mbs up
$25/month with no other TWC service.

OK, I didn't know that, so thanks. However...the speeds you posted aren't any better than the TWC I've already got. The guy who was telling me about FiOS claimed the speeds were on the order of 30MB down.

@#$@#$! AT&T's website is no better. I've been cell phone only for many years now. Their "is DSL available" thing requires entering your home phone number, which makes the site useless to me.

ATT FastAccess DSL Extreme 6.0
6+Mbs down
.450+Mbs up
$34.95/month with phone service, including a free WiFi gateway which is proving to be nicer than my Netgear Rangemax. - AB

Thanks for the info. I just checked into AT&T U-verse, and unfortunately, it's not being offered in my part of Cary, at least not yet. I called to find out whether/when they plan to offer U-verse to my address, and after being transferred to 'the right group', they still couldn't tell me (gee, thanks!). Felt like I was dealing with TWC all over again - completely useless customer service.
