Should I spend the $10 to upgrade the software on my iPod touch to 3.0?

Can't tell how much benefit it would give me

Depends on how you use your iPod. If you only listen to music or watch movies, you can probably skip it. If you connect via WiFi often and use an IM app, or type a lot of email, maybe. Here's a good review of the new features:

http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/news.phtml/24872/ipod-touch-features-30-software.phtml

I've upgraded my iPhone, since it was free, and the verdict is... meh. Nothing mind-blowing so far. Push notifications are nice, but may not matter on an iPod, since you don't have a constant connection. Cut and paste? I never missed it before and haven't used it yet. I like having two extra screens for apps - helps with the clutter. I've used Spotlight search once; haven't used any of the other new features yet. Probably wouldn't spend $10...

Does an iPod Touch have a microphone, to facilitate Voice Memo? I'm already finding that pretty useful.

No, but the second gen Touch (the current one) does have a mic *input*, so newer Apple earbuds add the microphone for you. But obviously you have to have those connected to use that feature, too, so it's a pain.

Also of note is that I don't believe before the 3.0 upgrade that you can use bluetooth headphones with a Touch (which could be handy for motorcyclists, skiers, etc).

Does 3.0 support music over bluetooth? I know car receivers have started to support this recently, but always mention the Iphone doesn't support it.

This says it does:

Stacy, if you want to know what generation your Touch is, go here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353

FWIW, I am a long time Blackberry user and have had an iPod Touch since the first generation game out. The iPhone 3Gs was enough to make me switch to ATT and combine to one device (thanks to improved camera and being 32G...the rest is a HUGE bonus).

Yeah, but I'm a cheap bastard, and right now I get my cell stuff free (Mom insists on paying for it... and I ain't complainin') LOL

But yeah, for the longest time I wasn't a cell phone user... but now it's a little different... still don't like talking on the phone, but being able to connect anywhere, not just a hot spot is nice... and being able to do it all from one thing would be even better.

Heh, I wasn't trying to convert anyone, just pointing out that I finally made the switch in case anyone was considering it.

Oh, it's funny, because I don't like talking on a cellphone much at all, either. I do like the iPod, though, and I do like a lot of the OTHER features of the iPhone (like the 'net capability, having a somewhat usable digicam handy all the time, etc), and now I get to have it ALL in one device instead of two.

Slightly off topic:
Donnie,
I downloaded "iPax" today for my iPod Touch which I was pretty sure is 2nd gen. When I tried to sync I got a message that the app required 2nd gen iPod and could not be installed. Wierd that you had just presented this link. I went there-according to the position and shape of the antenna cover and shape of the case, it IS a 2nd gen iPod as I had thought. Any ideas why it wouldn't accept the new app? Would the 3.0 upgrade perhaps change things?

Thanks in advance for anything you have to suggest.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled program.

Gwennie

Dunno, Gwen. I checked the page and it also says it requires OS 2.2.1 or greater. Are you at least at that version? And if you have a second gen Touch I think the 3.0 upgrade is worth the $10, so you might try that anyway.

But thanks for posting that, too, as I hadn't heard of it. Looks worth the buck for any autocrosser with an iPhone/Touch.

And, FWIW, I just bought and installed it to my 3.0 iPhone and it works fine.

Also got Dynolicious. Anyone know of any other good apps for car/racer types?
