Anyone familiar with this? http://www.proxyconn.com/ When you live in the sticks like I do, cable or DSL isn't offered even if I wanted to pay for it. BTW, my normal dial-up connection speed at home is 31.2K

Vincent,

Here is an FAQ link about Earthlink's version:

http://www.earthlink.net/accelerator/faq/

I suspect other ISP's offer similar software. I think I've seen ads from AOL.

Since I have broadband, I haven't experimented with Earthlink Accelerator.

I have DSL at work and home, so I haven't used proxy servers much. I do use a download manager that finds and can connect to as many a 8 proxy servers and split the download that I use for very large files that does speed up those downloads.
I wouldn't expect to see a significant increase in speed except for very large downloads, but even 56K would make your connection seem glacial. I'm surprised that you can't find a dialup ISP that would give you greater connection speed than that. You still have gertrude the phone operator on a plug panel and party lines where you live? LOL If you are that speed limited by your lines, I don't think that this is going to help you much.
Have you considered dish service?

These types of programs only help with view web pages they basically build a cache on your machine or a server somewhere to pull down the pages you go to the most, however it does not help when downloading large files or pages with Multiple Pictures.

Vincent,

Like Chuck said. Look into dish service. I don't beleive it forces you to use dish for TV. My wife's boss ran into the same problem with cable/dsl not being offered. He checked into dish but ended up going ISDN. That's a little more costly but it is a guaranteed bandwidth line.

Forget the proxy/caching servers. Your delays aren't really across multiple nodes on the net. It's all on your end pulling files down. With all the graphics on every webpage it's killing you on the modem. And with a best connect speed of 31.2K it sounds like you have a dirty line or you're going through switching that is probably older than most of us...

One thing to cache more pages locally. Go into IE and change your Internet Options/Temporary Internet Files/Settings. Change it from the default 20MB of cache to about 512MB. It isn't much disk space and you'll keep more pages/gifs/jpegs cached locally. It might help a little.

Graham

Be Carefull with Sattelite Service the equipment can be quite expensive and there is a delay built in. If you are going to use it for a work at home situation where you will be using VPN you will be very disapointed as the delay in sending the singal round trip will make you feel like you are on a 56k modem.

We also have a few VPN users who use satelline and complain like hell. The uplink is only 56K and over VPN they can't connect to Exchange as their machine times out sending data out, and they always bitch about using webmail :)

There are plenty of us around who moved away from civilization on purpose. Unfortunately, one of the biggest drawbacks to that I've found was lack of ability to get high speed internet for cheap. There's always the expensive option, which is a T1. They'll do those anywhere you can get phone service at all. Of course, they cost. Believe me, I know...
