I need some help from you Chevy fanbois..... I need to help my nephew get his truck rolling again. He's one of those broke college students, so I'm trying to save him a few bucks.

It's a....
> '99 standard cab/short bed base trim truck
> 6 cylinder w/ a straight drive
> 96k miles

symptoms.....
> stumbles/stalls under idle
> serious delay in the truck powering up after hitting the go pedal
> will not hold station speed while driving

I'm assuming either a fuel pump/filter is going bad, but didn't know if there was anything else I needed to look for. I'd also be interested in borrowing a scanner if anyone has one so I can look for other error codes.

If you can point me in the right direction to start w/ would be a great help so I can his truck running again.

Thanks

96k miles, for what it sounds like, it just needs a regular tune-up. plugs/wires, air filter, fuel filter.

I have 130k on my '99 1500 and have not had any issues that you are describing.

But, take that as you will, as I know enough about wrenching to get my hands dirty and have ALOT of spare parts.

ps, does he have a slightly sticky gas pedal on some days?

If he has a sticky pedal, I assume I need to look at the throttle body. I'm gearing up for all of that...sprays, lubes, perfumes....

Scan for any codes w/ OBD2 scanner. I'm surprised it isn't throwing a CEL with those symptoms.

+1 for cleaning the MAF. I can't recall if it was the '01 Chevy or the old '98 Durango, but one of them improved considerably after hitting it with MAF cleaner spray.

well, it's up and running. A new air filter and a MAF cleaning and it's purring away. Never seen an air filter that dirty, couldn't breath. I think a simple tune-up is next and he should be good to go for a while. I need to show my nephew how to check an air filter....

Thanks for the suggestions!!

the stall issues have returned, so I need help again. As for the truck, I replaced....

> air filter
> plugs and wires
> cap and rotor button
> cleaned the MAF

It ran fine for about 4 days and then starting stalling again. The truck acts just like it did before, just dies but will fire back up while coasting down the road or you'll need to turn the ignition. Not throwing any codes, but then again the CEL light may be burned out. Any thoughts? I did notice the that when I installed the after market coil wires the truck would not fire and I had to run the old coil wire. Anyway to test the coil?

ANY help is appreciated!!!

fuel filter? pcv valve? electrical issue?

Rodney, just find a wet floor and a big old steel screwdriver. turn the truck on and apply the screwdriver to the coil. kinda like Russian Roulette, if it don't kill you know what to do next.

sorry, not much help i know.

You say no codes, but did anyone actually hook up a scanner to see what may be stored or pending?

$1 says there are some codes stored which will point you in the right direction...

Autozone will read the codes for free.

I know it's a long shot but years ago I had a problem like you describe and it was the hot wire to the distributer. The insulation had worn thru
and the wire was intermittently shorting on the engine block.

I'll go with that bet too! If it runs that screwed up I expect you will find codes in History. If the CEL light is dead then you may actually find fresh codes.

If you find no codes at all then start checking wiring, especially ground circuits to the firewall.

My nephew just went by autozone and had the truck checked for codes. To my surprise, no codes listed. Guess I need to start looking for connections and shorts.... This won't be easy after all....

Does this vehicle use an IAC valve? With 4.6L Mustangs those can cause idle/stalling issues and it is possible that it could effect "off idle transition" also. With IAC's there is no point in cleaning them. Just pay the bucks for a new one. Our 97 Mustang had a stalling issue (automatic trans so that made it worse). Cleaning helped long enough to make it easy to know that was the problem. When it came back we just replaced the IAC. When the 01 developed the problem, I replaced the IAC and the problem went away.

Of course we have had both cars since new so we know their history.

Dick
