My 30 year old brother in law is moving from South Africa to attend Duke for his MBA. An electrical engineer by education Mike now works for a bank managing some computer area.

He has found three apartments but knows nothing about them. They are: Station 9, The Lofts at Lakeview and Alexan Place. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Mike isn't poor. He is renting his paid for in 5 years house in SA, sold his 911 and motorcycle to fund some of his expenses. He has a full scholarship, so he is smart too.

He will be looking for a late model car near the end of July. He prefers Japanese, 5spd, AC etc. He wants a used car in the $9,000.00 to $10,000.00 range for the two years he will be in the US. He would love a BMW but know a relatively new one will cost more than he wants to spend.

Any suggestion here will be appreciated.

Mike loves racing and plans to do some with us while he is here.

I live at the Lofts and the indoor parking garage is great....lots of free spaces so no one will park next to you. I will be moving out soon. If he can get me that $9-10k then I will just leave the 944 already in the parking deck for him so it will be ready when he gets here.

Only problem is that the ceilings/floors are thin so you can hear who is above you when they are home.

Actually on this note and not to thread jack at all but I am also looking for a place near duke as I am going there for my MS. I am probably looking to buy though and am wondering what are the nicer/safer neighborhoods around that area.

I lived in Alexan Farms, similar to Alexan place (same owner, same builder, and just a tiny bit further from campus on Garret rd.) and the walls aren't particularly thick there either. However, it was a nice townhouse at a decent price.

My best advice would be to get an apartment outside of durham and commute. You exponentially increase your chance of getting murdered or robbed by living inside the city limits.

Durham can't be as bad as Johannesburg!

Thanks for all the suggestions. Keep them coming. I'll foward it all to Mike and let him decide.
