I am tired of discussing global warming, so here is something more fun and less serious.

It is called Tilt/Shift Miniature Faking.

Basically either via a special tilt/shift lens or via software you create images that have an artificially short depth of field. This creates a narrow range of focus that is common when photographing small items such as model cars or other miniature models. Additionally they may enhance the color of the items to make the image “pop” more like it would if you were looking at a typical model car with a very high gloss and clean plant. The effect is pretty cool.

A guy named Keith Loutit has taken it a step further by creating movies with this technique. Instead of faked miniatures, his movies look more like faked stop motion movies. He does this by using the reduced depth of field, enhanced color, but adds time lapse photography so that the resulting movements are choppy and sped up as you might see with a badly done stop motion movie. Just as with the still images the movies are oddly interesting to watch.

This has to be the most interesting photography/movie thing I have seen in quite awhile.

One of Keith Loutit’s movies. He has six total on vimeo, so watch the others as well. They are really cool…

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Good find. For quick results, this beats messing around in Photoshop.
