I tried to install GE v5 but the install failed, said I needed to update windows XP, but it didn't say what updates were required. I like GE but I refuse to load every and all the windows updates wth all the problems that could bring. The previous version of GE worked just fine, but you cannot get the earlier versions of GE any more or upgrade a previous version. Why don't they say what updated components are required so I can decide if I want to load them, or is this a conspiracy with MS? Next will they tell you that you must have Vista to use GE?

Conspiracy with MS? Not likely. Google is MS' biggest real competitor in the quest for world domination.

I realize that, but why not tell you what WXP components rquire updating? certainly everything doesn't need updating to run GE?

I've always had fewer problems when I've just let Windows Update keep everything up to date as you go. I don't really know why you wouldn't do that, in fact.

Of course, now that I'm all but Windows free, I'm even happier.

I find I have more problems by not updating Windows. Windows Update is your friend.

Well, I wouldn't call Windows Update a friend. More like a vital business associate I meet once a month for a polite but icy lunch.

If it ain't broke don't fix it is my mantra when it comes to computers.

I'm guessing I'm not going to change your mind, but FWIW...

You should at least have Windows do it's regular security updates. Because it's Windows that means it IS broke and if they release a fix for something like security then it IS worthwhile.

I've had automatic full update on XP turned on for probably 10 different machines for long periods of time and never had it "break" the machine or cause something else to break. But YMMV, I suppose.

And also FWIW, Vista is a pile of steaming dung I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

Thanks for the info and opinions (and for confirming my take on Vista!)
I just can't believe that it requires a whole lot of security etc updates on Windows just to run GE 5, in fact AFAIK most of the updates MS has released were to plug security weaknesses that made the internet vulnerable to DOS or spam attacks not to protect my little ol computers from being crashed by kids with too much time on their hands. That's what I use firewalls and virus detection software for. I have had computers for the last 26 years (my first computer ran CPM and basic with 64K of RAM) and been surfing the internet since Al G invented it, and have never gotten any virus or malware more seious than a couple that wanted to change my home page to a bunch of porn sites or try to tell me i had a problem that only buying their bogus software could fix. Never anything that I couldn't get rid of in a couple hours, usually for free, and never requiring reformating a hard drive.
I might have expected that I might have to upgrade to the latest version of directX, driver for my video card or some other graphic component or similar, but couldn't the installation program simply IDed what was needed? Not a very helpful or friendly error message for a free program aimed at the non techie. I guess I was hoping someone here might have an idea what was needed other than telling me I should follow along wherever MS wants to lead me.

Oh, I understand your frustration with it needing updates and then not identifying what they are. It probably is something fairly core like DirectX, though, and not something you're likely to get around too easily if you don't want to hand over control of the updates. Which is annoying, I agree. Highly.

As for the security things, yes, some are bigger problems than just DOS or spam kind of things. There have been some IE holes and such that could bite you, but in general you are fine with a firewall and some anti-virus scanners for email and the like.

Like you, I almost NEVER have trouble with this kind of thing. Almost NEVER. But I've always had good firewalls and I never ran IE once Mozilla got decent. And I'm careful where I surf and EXTREMELY careful what email I open. Unfortunately many folks aren't, and sometimes Windows has bigger security holes than just these things, too.

Anyway, like I said, since we got to XP I've never had a problem with letting the Windows update just run. At least the XP team finally got it pretty dang right, to MS's credit. Where they came up with Vista, well, I'll never understand.

As for finding what it is exactly that GE needs, well, usually some Googling can turn that kind of thing up. Might take some drilling, though.

And not that it matters, but I've been on the Internet since 1990. Chances are when you surf the web the server that you're hitting is running code that I wrote, in fact. Not much, but some. And I had a Commodore 64 as my first computer, but I was only like 12 at the time. 8)

Yep, when I was 12 we still used an abacus, but I graduated to a slide rule in High school. First computer I ever saw was the one they installed at the Allied Chemical plant I worked at. Took up a specially constructed large atmospherically controlled room and made sounds resembling a pipe organ as it operated. They took a group of employees and gave them a full year of training on how to use and program the beast often saw them wandering the halls with stacks of punch cards. I remember the first Xmas the programmers had it playing Xmas carols! Corporate management wasn't too pleased... And those punch cards, some of the secretaries found a way to turn them into door wreaths... :D
First computer i actually owned was a HP 85 console unit with a separate Winchester drive (first hard drive), had a 5 MB capacity and the drive was bigger than most desktops today. That unit set me back $10K! I still have a Tandy Color Computer in it's box that belonged to my FIL.

<-- First computer -- Vic 20 !!!! Talk about "fear the power"

My Dad decided it sucked the day he brought it home and took it back for the mega machine, Commodore 64. "We'll never need anything more than this." he said at the time!!!

We even had the original Flight Simulator with the white on black line graphics screen. It was so realistic!!!!

Andy Hollis, autocrosser extraordinaire developed most of the flight simulator programs back in the day...

I can remember my dad telling me stories of programming back in the 60's with punch cards. He and another guy worked on a particular program for about 2 months. It was a big job that was very important to their manager. After finalizing it, they told the manager they would bring it over. It required about 10 "racks" for the code. They added an 11th rack filled with cards that they had thrown on the floor. When the got it to the manager they put the 10 racks (all of the program) in the case to send to headquarters, and when they were picking up the final 11th rack (the fake), my dad pretended to trip and launched the 1200+ cards all over the managers floor! The manager nearly shit himself :)

After they told him it was BS, he told them that they should be fired, but couldn't stop laughing while he said it. Ahh, programmers.

If you ever want to see why they call getting rid of errors in computers "debugging", if you're in upstate NY, head to Endicott (just outside of Binghampton) and see the IBM museum. Bugs (mostly moths) would make their way into the vacuum tubes of the early computers and literally shut them down. They had to "debug them" to get it working again :) - AB
