No type of media player (Real Player, Windows Media) will work on my home computer. Apparantly somehow I'm missing two files that are needed. The files are cpuinf32.dll and mplapx.dll that are missing.

I did a search on several machines here at work to find these files and finally did so. However I found them on a NT based machine and I have 98SE at home.

My question are these files the same though they are from a different OS? And assuming the files I have located will work where do they go? What's the path?

Thanks for the help!

Have you tried getting the latest version of Mediaplayer (for 98) and installing it?

Yes I did. Same problem. Then I installed the latest version of Real Player. Same problem.

Apparently these type of system files aren't included.

Couple ideas....

(1) Check what the listed system requirements are for the version of Windows Media Player that you are trying to install. Maybe it requires a specific service pack level or other type of patch?

(2) Also, if you have the Win 98 install CD, you might look and see if the file exists on that CD. You may need a program that is able to open CAB files (I think that is what is on the Win 9X CDs). If you find it on the CD (in a CAB file) you might be able to extract those files.

(3) Quick Google search finds this...

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=%2 ... l&oe=UTF-8

Basically mentions that this might be caused by the installation of software such as AngelPotion, DVDIt or ULead software and is not a Windows Media Player problem. Not sure if that is the issue for you or not.

It has been so many years that I have dealt with a Win 9X OS that I am pretty out of date. Once I moved to NT 4.0/2000/XP I haven't looked back.

The message below (mentioned on that page) is EXACTLY what I get.

The DLL "cpuinf32.dll" can not be loaded. OS reports:
The Specified module could not be found.

The DLL "mplapx.dll" can not be loaded. OS reports: The
Specified module could not be found.

I do have a Ulead program, but it was over a year ago when it was installed. So it's worked OK for a year but now has screwed up.

I'll try the service patch also and see what that does. Since I do have the missing files to try and reload where would they go? My guess would be C:\Windows\[missing file]?

I have 98SE on my laptop. After school I will see where the files are supposed to be located if I have them.

If you don't have them yet, you can find them here:

plapx.dll

cpuinf32.dll

You can put them anywhere your PATH is setup to search. It's been a while since I've used Win98 but I think "C:\windows\system32" would work fine. If not, go to a dos box and type "PATH" and put them somewhere along the path it displays.
