I recently got an ipod touch (16GB) to replace my aging but still useful Palm M515. I grossly underestimated the pia  it was going to be to transfer all my contacts and calendar from the Palm format to Outlook 2003. I’ve read the ipod manual which is really fairly useless, mostly telling you how to do the obvious. Anyone have any suggestions other than biting the bullet and keying in from scratch? When you go to iTunes there is a list of possible programs to sync from. I’m assuming that other programs can not be added to that list due to ipod’s operating system not recognizing them. Is that correct? Thanks in advance for any help.
Other than this inconvenience, I’m really enjoying the ipod. Great for music, video and to take on weekend trips to keep up with email, etc. (JF, still anxious to test the AX stuff, hint, hint.)

Depends on the size of the database what your best option is. If it's not *that* big, consider keying in again (or cutting and pasting, anyway) as you'll end up with a nice clean slate. Often times moving data like this will result in some corruption and clean is nice.

But if it's a lot and you want to try, look into exporting from the Palm software to some intermediate format. It *should* be able to export into some simple file type like a spreadsheet or CSV (comma separated value) file and then you can import THAT. You might also try importing into a Google account and then bringing it back down that way.

Whatever you do, make sure you keep a backup of your Palm databases and you can try this multiple times until it works "right." It's never easy to do this, but the times I've done it have generally worked out after about three times more tinkering than it *should* take.

If you do use an intermediary like a spreadsheet, open it after the export in the spreadsheet program you have and make sure it all looks "right." Backup that file and edit it if it doesn't. If you use a CSV file, that is a simple text file and can be edited with Notepad or any other text file editor. CSVs are harder (but not impossible) to sanitize.

Thanks, Donnie. I’ve tried a couple of things, but, in the end, you’re correct. I think the best method is going to be copy/paste for contacts, (that actually went pretty well, but will just take time) and I’ll just begin anew with Outlook’s calendar.

I appreciate the ideas. I learned a lot just fooling around trying your suggestions.

Don't forget to get Dynolicious. I hear it is fun to play with, if not totally necessary.

Dumb Question...

Can you just set up the Palm software to hotsync to Outlook? It should be supported in the Palm Conduit (one way or another).
