The next Porsche Boxster will feature a four-cylinder engine for the first time, Stuttgart insiders have said. Few details are known about the entry-level Boxster, but it is “the most economical Porsche ever” according to company sources.

Porsche’s most economical models are currently the 2.7-litre Boxster and Cayman, which emits 222g/km of CO2.

The turbocharged engine is likely to offer just over 200bhp, and next Boxster is expected to be significantly lighter than its predecessor.

Expect this entry-level model in 2011.

As much as I love Porsche and with the fact that I am a 914 nut and this sounds much like the rebirth of a 914, I don't get this move.

On the engine side, either they spend the money to develop a new 4-cyl engine or they use an engine from outside of Porsche. If it is a new engine, then it might be a 4-cyl version of the new direct injection 6-cyl engine. Maybe they developed both at the same time, but I haven't heard anything about this. This was the plan with the Boxster in the first place. It was supposed to have both a 4 and 6-cyl version. But the 4-cyl version was dropped during development. Why develop an entirely new engine design just for one car?

If they source an engine from elsewhere (Most likely source would be VW) then are they putting this into the Boxster chassis or is this a totally new chassis? I can't imagine this going into the Boxster chassis. If this does go into the Boxster chassis, is this going to be priced so low that people are going to buy this 4-cyl version over the 6-cyl version? IMHO, they would have to cut costs elsewhere to really make the overall car that much cheaper. And will it really cost that much less if they reduce trim level? Maybe so.

If this does happen, I could see this as a totally new model that is seperate from the Boxster/Cayman. Rumours of VW and Porsche doing a new 914 seem to show up nearly yearly now. But with Porsche doing a slow take over of VW this might happen. Especially if the car uses a different chassis and uses a VW engine. Think MR2 by VW.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Porsche now officially owns VW, so they have access to all of the parts ben, but I think this will just be a chpped version of the 3.X motor.

And everyone knows that's why people buy Porsches. Because, you know, they were losing all those sales to the Honda Civic Hybrid.

(Seriously, I can understand why. The EU is not being friendly to manufacturers of non-boring cars over the next few years, and this at least shows willing. But it did make me laugh.)
