After receiving an IM from an uninvolved party, I have decided that I may have overreacted and have unlocked this thread.
I am probably over sensitive to the entire topic (political threads, not one party vs. the other). Another forum that I visit frequently is now about 50%+ political discussions and despite forum rules to keep it civil, it is way out of hand. It is making me want to stop visiting that particular site.
One common problem I see when discussing touchy topics like race, religion and politics is that it is very easy for comments meant in jest to be taken the wrong way. In my opinion it’s the responsibility of the poster to make it obvious what his true intent is. People forget that normal face to face conversations involve more than just words. Tone, body language, etc. help define the intent. That is why forums have emoticons. At least one “wink” emoticon would have changed Steve’s post from “Is he joking!?” to “He is joking!”
You could also say “he was over the top in his comment, so he must be joking”. When it comes to topics like this, there is no over the top. No matter how over the top you think it is, there is someone who thinks that and people who are also willing to believe that the comment is sincere.
Feel free to discuss.
