you don't have to love me, and let's get high awhile.

i'm seriously trying, but John McCain as the Magic Man is a bit of a stretch for me. or maybe it is the amount of smoke i tend to equate with that song, and that era. if only he wasn't a member of george bush's party. McCain's hands are tied; oddly enough, again.

oh yeah, he is 70 billion years old and they are playing Heart songs after his speech. i'll bet even his kids don't have any idea who the band Heart is. not to mention the lyrics. light'em if you got 'em my beaubies. peace.

There was a stir about Palin's usage of "Barracuda" too. Maybe he should have used it instead?

I have got to say this is the most interesting campaign I remember. It appears that is has been reduced to image or percieved image. I would really like to propose a complete do over.

I do find it interesting that speeches (especially the convention speeches) seem to count for so much. I mean, here are candidates (both parties, obviously), speaking words that have been written by someone else, in exactly the manner that they have been coached on and practicing for hours. And everyone (it seems) uses the impressions they get from those performances to "inform" their decisions.

Regarding the musical selections for the GOP convention, I was also a bit surprised, but on the other hand, the median age of the delegates is about .. my age, so you play to the audience you have, right? I didn't watch much of the Democratic convention other than Obama's speech from Mount Olympus, but I suspect they never played "Happy Days are Here Again", at least during the televised portions.

Sure they practice. Sure they have speechwriters. But if you don't believe in the message you're delivering, I don't think you're going to give a good speech. In my memory, I don't recall four more eloquent candidates for Pres/VP. In the past few elections, jokes and complaints about the lack of eloquence of the candidates (directed at both sides, though Bush caught the lion's share of the snickering) have distracted us from the real business of understanding and assessing their arguments. This time, we can concentrate more on the substance of their messages and decide which ones better represent our beliefs and priorities.

That said, I'm a little politic'ed out tonight. Heading downstairs to pop my Smokey and The Bandit DVD in the player, and hoist a Diet Coke in Jerry Reed's memory. :)

The very same speechwriters write State of the Union addresses, Saturday radio addresses, foreign head-of-state visit welcome messages, speeches before the UN, et cetera, ad infinitum, ad nauseum.
