Road & Track. Phil Hill is survived by his wife Alma, one son and two daughters. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends, family and colleagues. More information as it becomes available.

That sucks.

Met a grandson of his at a CMP test day a couple months ago. Nice kid. Heck, it wasn't an open test day...they had the track rented for themselves to test some vintage car they were going to ship to Monaco and were kind enough to let us slip in some time while they were off track (which turned out to be a lot as they had motor trouble). And we were a little bit scared to just go up and start chatting, but he came over and started talking to us.

He has a business that does concours restorations of vintage cars and is one of the premier shops. He used to judge at the Pebble Beach Concours d'elegance (along with Hank Ketchum) and always had cars there. He will be missed.

I heard he was in the hosptital on Speed this week. I watched Grand Prix (he played a small part along with Graham Hill, Dan Gurney, and Jim Clark) in honor of him last night. A true passing of an era.

I'm kicking myself for passing up the opportunity to meet him at the Daytona 24 Hours several years ago. He was signing a book and the line wasn't long. I think I was actually scared to meet him (I recalled a few years before when I found myself absolutely tongue-tied when I was trying to tell David E Davis that his Car & Driver editorials were one of the few bright spots of my sophomore year in college).

Long article (from his GP days) on the Autoweek website: http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a ... wsletter01
