I think the above sums up what I think is wrong with "designers"
My first thought when I saw this earlier reminded me of some recent video games I have played. There is a series of games on PCs and Consoles called "Battlefield". A recent version of this game on the Xbox basically ditched a defining feature of the game. This was a result of the design team wanting to try something "new". The fans were not happy.
As much as I am sure it drives "idea people" crazy, the consumers want "the same thing, but different". To me this means that if it's not broke, don't fix it. And at the same time you do have to do something different, but just don't screw up the good parts.
My fear is that they are going to ruin a good thing. I personally don't like the looks of the current model vs. the 1st and 2nd generation models. If anything, I think they should revisit the 1st generation design ideas vs. trying something "fresh and new".
The Porsche 911 is a perfect example of this. Some may say it's boring, etc. But it is a classic design that Porsche really shouldn't mess with. I would say the same applies to the Miata.
I agree with the plan to make the next Miata more ballsy and the design not so conservative. This car has just never looked right to me and the proportions don't look right.
Keeping things the same is for focus groups and people who can't deal with change. Consumers are sheep. They flock to identical neighborhoods so they can live in identical houses and drive identical Tahoes and Accords. Then the all buy Prius' (Priusi?, Pri?) as one lemming flock. The Miata is a niche car anyway, so if they offend some with the new design big deal, they will gain others if the design is good. (See Solstice formula) I would like the next one to be more aggressive looking and have some more Hp (doesn't need a lot, but enough). Maybe FI, but not just a Is this a 2012 or a 2008? OH yeah they changed the headlights.
Which are the good parts? Maybe your good parts are not someone else's. OMG it is not air cooled? Is that one of the good parts? Change is inevitable and needs to be. The 9xx is a classic design and one that is obviously successful judged from the marketplace.
So just call me an "idea" person
