Personally I think once a dog is fully house broken, crates are pointless. A properly trainded dog will not mess up a house, sleep on the furniture, or anything else negative if left 'out' instead of put in a crate.

And I think those who keep a dog in a crate during the day while at work/gone/etc need to think about owning a pet to begin with.
