So we have a new neighbor down the street that has 2 large dogs that are a mix of Rottweiler and Boxer. These are BIG dogs. Apparently they used to be "inside" dogs that have now been turned into "outside" dogs. They have a backyard with a 6 foot privacy fence. That should be good, right??? WRONG!! These dogs have managed to BUST THROUGH THE FENCE several times. They got out one night and managed to scare my neighbor who is a Durham cop. He said that if he had his shot gun he would have shot them!!!!

My problem is that I have 2 kids, and several of our neighbors have kids. The kids would be a light snack for these big dogs.

I don't want to kill them, I just want to scare the crap out of them.

So, please recommend your favorite pellet or BB gun!!!

Paintball. Seriously. Go to Dick's Sporting Goods and pick one up along with some paint. Not only does it hurt, but it leaves a nice mark that tells your neighbor he might want to keep them in. They can't really accuse you of trying to "hurt" the dog, either.

Not sure of your county, but at last check the law on shooting someone else's dog on your property for real was left to the county to interpret. In Wake County the dog needed to be actively attacking for it to be lawful, but in some other places all he has to do is step foot on your property. If it did come to that, best bet is to call your county sheriff's department and ask.

I had a dog on the receiving end of a bullet (merely a wound, fortunately) in Wake county back around 1999. Dog was obviously not attacking as the entry wound was beside his tail on his buttock and the bullet lodged in the rib area. Which meant he was pointed away from the asshole who did it. So unless he found a way to attack by rubbing his ass and tail on the dude...

But my dog wasn't aggressive, wasn't as big as what you describe, and was not ALLOWED to roam. He got out ONCE. The neighbor just didn't like us. They also didn't have kids.

If you're in a densely populated area, you should have responsive animal control you can call, too. But the paintball idea is my favorite.

I hadn't thought about the paintball idea. I like that. One plus with that is that a stray round isn't going to cause much damage to an innocent kid. It might be hard to explain to the neighbor parents why their kids are coming home with yellow paint splats on them!

I'm going to have to make a trip to Dick's this week!!!

Thanks Donnie.

Edit - We are in Wake county just outside of the beltline so shooting the damn dogs is, unfortunately, out of the question.

I have a blowgun that you can borrow. The needle dart wouldn't kill the dogs, but would definitely get their attention. Ever want to sneak around your neighborhood like a pygmy?????

Amazingly, yes, I have wanted to sneak around like a pygmy! Though I haven't been pygmy sized in a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time!

Keep the ideas coming everybody. I'm kind of leaning towards the paintball gun idea right now, but I'm still open to any ideas.

Ryan, those pyramidair guns are nice but a little spendy for my purpose.

They are VERY nice though.

Have you and the other neighbors tried discussing it with the new move-ins? I admire your intent to not do harm to the dogs.

I agree. Ask the neighbors to do something to keep the dogs contained. Especially if they are not just big, but big and mean. ( I have 5 dogs the smallest of which is 55lbs biggest 90 all of whom are friendly but a bit happy to meet folks :) They are kept indoors though and not allowed to run free.

If the neighbors are butts about it or refuse to comply there may be a nuisance law that you can use. (Ask the Durham cop) :)

It is owners like those that give responsible owners a bad name.

Todd. report them to your local enforcement agency. animal control would be my first choice. be persistent and animal control will pay a visit to your new neighbors.

this would be a non-negotiable issue for me if i felt my children were at risk.

if it comes to an issue of shooting at them, you need to be able to drop them.

BTW, i have two dogs myself along with barn cats and of course the damn horses.

I have a 10 pump and single pump air rifle and some BB's if you want... I can loan them out to ya. They seem to work at keeping squirrels off of my bird feeder.

Shooting a dog with a BB gun will only further antagonize him. A 20ga or with birdshot or a .410 will get his attention though. I wouldn't shoot anything that I wasn't prepared to kill though, ymmv.

We did, they were apethetic to our concerns. They so much as said that their dogs wouldn't attack unless the kids were messing with them. As we all know, that is not necessarily true.

They also denied that the dogs had ever been outside the fence. Obviously that is not true as we have seen them out 5 or 6 times in the evening.

Sometimes reasoning just doesn't work.

I'd collect some video evidence for your own protection, and to bolster any case with animal control.

First, let me say I love dogs. That said, I have never been involved with a claim with a dog bite that the people didn't say, " why that dog never has hurt anybody, it would't bite unless it was being antoginized, etc." Dogs are dogs, they bark, poop, pee, and bite. I had a problem a few years ago with a St. Bernard a neighbor had, came to my front porch at 11pm and was barking and raising hell like it wanted in. I couldn't find one of the 3 guns I have been given over the years, only thing available was a baseball bat. I went after him and ran him off. A few minutes later the neighbor brought him into my yard to show me how friendly he was, I again took the baseball bat out to the yard and ran them off ( Sounds like jerry springer doesn't it.)

Bottom line if I felt my kids safety was threatened I would take Steve's advice cover your butt with calling animal control and then if that doesn' t work, I wouldn't think twice about killing them, then call the neighbor and tell him to come pick up the carcass off your lawn.
