Now *that* was more fun than a grown adult should be allowed to have!
:D

Ignore the YouTube vids of the Altamont and Detroit races - I think the organizers are making a real effort to eliminate any trace of demolition derby from the event (as evidenced as us going on probation for our minor disobediences   ).

I hope to get some vids up soon - you'll see that all of us got to have some really great wheel-to-wheel action all weekend.

Our team put in a hell of a lot of work, and built a hell of a nice car (the theme was a hit, and we were noted down as a *fast* car on the pre-race test day - another  )

Huge, HUGE thanks from me to:

- Tom and Vincent for all thier work, and letting me on the team
- Steve, Walter, and Bernie for joining up and being completely invaluable through the whole adventure
- Les for signing on as crew chief (the track bug may not have bit yet, but it is circling awfully close!)
- Gwen, Alex, Stephen, Gordon, and Cathie for cheering and helping with everything a 'non-pit-crew' person was allowed to do
- Ryan, Aaron, Dan, and everyone else who helped on the various build weekends
- Chris Brown and Charlie Guthrie for the loaner parts - they all came back unscathed
- And (this one's for you Stacy!) our sponsors Vocus, Asphalt Ventures, Cline Hall Insurance, Apex Contract Carpets, Pets Companion Inn, Bolerjacks, and Performance Chassis

Oh yeah - I loves me some RWD e30, I think 8)

Congrats guys... glad to have helped in a small way.

I'm glad to hear the organizers making it more of a race than maybe it had been in the past.

Wow, what a weekend! I can say that was the most fun I’ve had with my clothes still on. I’ve never done anything like it for sure. After just three laps I was saying two things to myself. First, this was NOTHING like an HPDE event…nothing. Second, the folks that can do this (wheel-to-wheel) at 200 MPH like Daytona have some HUGE balls. I had fun, and was surprisingly quite calm and comfortable out there, but have no desire to race going as fast as those guys. Did I mention this was not-at-all like an HPDE?

I found during my sessions that 90% of the other drivers would race me clean. Some would race me harder than others, but still clean. Several gave hand signals, thumbs up to me and me to them during caution laps, and general courtesy. The Triad guys had a team there (P-51 Mustang) and they raced us clean too. Of course there were drivers who were a$$holes, but overall the whole event was no where near anything like the demolition derby events they run in California. Our car only has one tire mark and one small dent. Just add gas and we could race it for another 24 hour event today.

Our over all finish was 100 laps down in 27th place. Considering that Friday afternoon we didn’t know if we’d even start, much less finish, we did pretty darn well IMO. Still the racer in all of us (and that 20/20 hindsight thing) wishes we would have done things differently and finished higher. Besides the bullsh!t penalties (1.5 hours worth) we were assessed, we definitely had a car that was capable…wait for it…of actually winning. IMO, there about 5 other cars that were as fast, or faster than ours. One of those was a Spec Miata dinged 200 laps before he started, the Spec E30 that was crushed, and the RX-7 that looked brand new that ending up winning. Of course the fastest car doesn’t always win so the difference was (yes Donnie Barnes was right) pit stops, driver experience, and those B.S. penalties. While we didn’t need to be NASCAR fast, we did should have waited for a caution (which we did a few times) and do our driver changes closer to the track rather than our pit stall. I’m confident that if we ran the same race today our team would have been in the top ten. Bret’s team had tons of race experience, and even though our car was faster, they had better drivers. Those guys (Bret’s team) were hard-core. They drove 1:45 sessions and, Al Taylor didn’t even stop to use the bathroom even though he relieved himself anyway! Sorry, but I’m not willing to p!ss my pants (and the race seat) to win. Hats off to Bret’s team for their outstanding finish BTW. The thing that bugs me though is at LEAST 20 of the cars that finished ahead of us were either very slow, had crappy drivers, or both. The difference was they pitted less, took less time doing so, and didn’t get any penalties. Live and learn right?

My personal experience through this whole business has been very positive. It took way more time, work, and money than anyone on our team thought. Add to that we had to drop and add different team members several times, and things didn’t get any easier. They were quite a few ruffled feathers among our flock at times, but we all came together when it counted. At the event everyone pitched and when something needed to be done it was by any and everyone. The team concept was definitely present on the track and in our pits. I’d to especially thank Les for performing our crew chief duties as well as making us all lunch both days. Also thanks to Gordon, Cathy, Alex, and Stephen for driving down to support our team. Last but not certainly not least, I’d like to thank all my teammates (Tom, Walter, Steve, Kendt, Bernie, and Les) for all there hard work and making this event so much fun. I can’t wait to do it again!

Congrats guys!

PS - you know I'm starting to kick myself for selling the old chipped-and-LSD'ed 1986 325es that I got for free and got running for $22.... Looks like Lemons is becoming Spec ETA.

vk,

Your wife is a nurse. Have her put a cathathiter (don't know how to spell that) routing it to the radiator and you can kill two birds with one stone!

It was e30 central, no question. I certainly have a new respect for the ETA, and it was really well suited to something short like CMP. We had tons of grunt coming off of all the slow corners and enough revs that we didn't have to row the gearbox too much. In addition, we got what seemed to be excellent gas mileage...and the stupid car only used about 1/4 of a quart of 20-50 GTX all weekend. We had a great car, and it will live to fight another day. Bernie and Walter will see to it.

Well, I had a great time and I didn’t even get to drive or touch the car. (The touch the car part was a condition of pre-registration of the Lemons Event for the crew.) I must admit, I’ve been watching Bernie for 3 years now at HPDE’s and most recently, Time Trials, and nothing has even come close to tweaking my interest in track like this event has done. It really had it all!

We got to Camden Thursday evening and the guys pushed the car into the garage early Friday morning. Friday they were able to do practice laps at pre-assigned times. The cooling problem plagued them throughout the day. Once everything that could be done, including pressure bleeding the cooling system, taking out and then changing the thermostat, had been done, there was only one thing remaining to do. Change the radiator. Walter had brought an extra one, just in case. Changing it was quick but they could only drive around the paddock by that time, around 6:30 PM, (and a little sneak test drive down the road, gutsy maneuver, Kendt,) so they really didn’t know for sure if it was fixed until Saturday when the race began. I could hardly breathe watching Kendt, who was the 1st behind the wheel, until he had been on the track for over 15 minutes and didn’t come in. Apparently, the old dog wasn’t heating up. Bernie was 2nd in line to drive and when Kendt came in the report was, “water temp is holding, brakes are long and going to the floor.” Try to keep them cool. As it turned out there were enough cautions that the brakes were manageable throughout day one. When they were black flagged near the end of the day they bled the brakes and that seemed to take care of that problem.

How was the driver order established? After a little Friday evening refreshment at a really good restaurant, drawing straws seemed the best method, so that’s what happened. On Sunday Tom, Team Captain, established the order. Everyone had their assignments, helping drivers in and out, getting them strapped in, getting the cool shirts hooked up and the cooler refilled, checking tire temps, etc. Saturday could have been faster but was a great teaching tool for Sunday. Sunday went great. Saturday it was overcast, not really hot, and Walter spent most of his driving hour in the rain. Sunday was sunny and hot. The cool shirts saved the day and made VK’s hour and 20 minutes on Sunday morning easier.

Watching the People’s Curse car being destroyed was a hoot. One car got tarred and feathered and another driver had to plant a tree while being pelted with tofu. Now that’s just classy!

Thanks to our THSCC Prez, Stephen, who supported the team by driving all the way down just for a few hours. Also Gordon and Cathy Taylor and Alex Maier who came down for both days. Again, I want to thank the Men of DoriftoDog for letting me tag along, and feel like I was a little part of a really great event.
