Any recommendations for types of RC cars to look for on Craigslist? I know nothing about them, wondering if there are some good brands to look for... Looking for something fast and durable and capable of off-roading around the yard.

Also if anyone has some cars you and your kids have outgrown let me know!

(PS if you know me you know I'm not looking to spend too much...)

I was never able to break my RC10. They make good stuff.

http://www.teamassociated.com/index.htm

Edit: They can be expensive if you get a nice car and controller.

His RC car makes me giggle. He even has a little "track" in the backyard.

I had lots of fun with my RC10 car too. It survived many impacts.

IMO, if you're looking for something to play around in the yard with get a 1/10th scale 2wd truck. The buggies and the 1/18th trucks are just a little too low to make it over most grass.

Stay away from older models. Old plastic parts break easy and are harder to find.

Also, go ahead and get a brushless electric motor. If you don't now, you will as soon as you see a car with one. They can be as fast as the nitro engines without the mess and noise.

I hear that the Duratrax Evader models are knock-offs of the previous generation losi models. I don't know if it's true or not, but if so, that would be a good model to pickup for cheap.

If I were looking to buy one at the moment, I'd look for a Traxxas Rustler VXL, Stample VXL or maybe the new Slash. Whatever you find (traxxas, losi, associated), get a RPM front bumper. It'll pay for itself within a week.

edit.. Oh yeah, this is not a cheap hobby. 8)

+1 for RC-10. There are tons of parts for that model.

A little O/T, but here's a sweet RC jump from last year:

I personally like the Losi stuff best, but agree with Jason...go 1/10 brushless and go ahead and go 2wd truck. The Losi stuff used to convert between buggy and truck quite easily if you care. But Associated stuff is easier to find parts and such for...if you're just monkeying around, that stuff is great.

All the stuff I have isn't really suitable for kids (1/8th scale nitro) but I used to buy all my stuff from Tower Hobbies.

They always had a great selection and customer service but I must admit I haven't purchased anything in a few years.

If you think you're going to race it, definitely get a Losi or Associated.

I use Tower Hobbies and Ebay. There are two local stores that carry a large selection of parts. Hobby Masters in Raleigh and Toy Town Hobby Shop in Fuquay Varina. They are more expensive, but if you want a part quickly they are there.

Matt, part of that video is missing. The first time I saw it, they showed the guy driving the car around after he walks around the house. That's amazing.

I personally can't stand Tower Hobbies. They send out way too many damned catalogs for one thing.

Anyway, go pick up a copy of RC Car Action magazine. There are several fairly big operations that advertise there that have better prices and great service. I don't recall who exactly I've used, but that's how I found them. Most big book stores have RC Car Action on the newsstand...

Their shipping can also be hit or miss and can take almost two weeks at times.

Donnie, if you recall any of the other stores that you've had luck with, post them here please.

Didn't you say Jeff Underwood's car made you squeal like a school girl? I think I am starting to see a theme.

TEAM LOSI.. i have two team Losi cars, 2wd truck types, fully adjustable suspension race trucks.. electric power, nice rigs.. ran them for years before racing real cars.. off road type.. almost everything is changeable, they come as kits.. very good.. traxxas hawk is quick quick truck too.. but try team losi.I know of a hobby shop that sells them here in raliegh.. we used to race with them offroad, carpet circle track indoor, skate ranch indoor oval.. outdoor offroad, you name it i did it.. even paved oval with my truck.. i did it all. Hobby masters on lynn road.. in raleigh are people we used to race with, ask for tim.. Hes in a wheelchair, but he knows alot about RC cars..

BTW.. have you seen the latest craze in rc cars? radio control tractor pulling?
they will have two or three rc two cycle or wankel engines on a fabbed frame, and pull a mini working pulling sled.. that is so cool to me.. and man do they smoke.
