Jim,

That is a phenomenon that has been happening for the last 2 or so years. Greenville was even worse but we still had 115 IIRC.

I do agree that attendance is gonna start dropping across the board.

Mike you don't shop recreationally, you are a pro if there ever has been one.

Have you considered a KLR? I had a f650gs but what I read says the KLR is just as good, more plentiful and cheaper.

My response was to get a turd that I can run on 87 octane:

had to drive to ECU in Greenville for some financial aid for my oldest son that's now decided to get his 4 year degree. On the way down I decided to see what the 528i would do mileage wise as I've considered selling it for something more gas friendly. Here what I found....

> driving on 42 from Clayton to Wilson (or at least as far as 264), OBC stated 31.7 mpg at a cruise control setting of 64. (BTW, the nuvi GPS showed I was going 61...interesting)
> hit 264 and reset the OBC. From Wilson to Greenville at 79 (and showing 76 on the GPS), mileage dropped to 27.6. That's a HUGH difference with a change of only 15mph. I also had the sunroof open for the trip down to G'ville.
> on the way back I used the AC and kept my same speed of 79. OBC showed a marked drop down to 25.5. That sucks.
> back on 42 to Clayton and still using the AC and mileage improved some, but only 28.6.

What did I learn? Slow down and try not to use the AC if you can. Now, do I want to sell the 528? Not really. Mileage is fair on the car, rides great and I finally have most of the maintenance items taken care of. I also consider if I were to get into an accident with this car vs some of the new smaller cars, I choose the 528.

Good grief, don't sell the Mustang. Your daughters will never forgive you!

What final drive ratio does it have? 3.27? Have you considered just swapping in a taller (numerically lower) final drive, such as a 3.08 or 2.73? If you can get the revs down to 1500 at 65 mph in 5th, you might be able to significantly improve highway mileage. With a 2.73, my old Mustang used to get 27-29 MPG on the highway if you kept it under 65 - not a problem when the national limit was 55. Of course, your mod motor makes its torque about 1000 RPM higher than a 5.0, but I think it's worth investigating. The guy in Apex who changed my old Mustang's final drive last year, to a scandalously short 3.08, has a shed full of take-out 8.8" gears.

Alternatively, short shift, short shift, short shift, but don't sell. That car deserves better.

The weak dollar has much to do with the higher fuel prices.

As many of you notice I pull 8 cylinders with 4.

It takes me a half tank to pull 60 miles to VIR. As long as i go slow and steady, use my transfer case and anticipate stopping, it seems to work out fine.

I'm lucky that the state provides me with a vehical to drive during the week, and when I'm on call and the fire danger is high. my work truck, which is a 1 ton F350 gas  gets around 8 mpg, when I'm carrying water. I fill up once a week at 34 gallons pop...

my point....
My county gas budget is shot, as i'm paying fuel for 2 1-ton fords, a road tractor, and a fire plow (dozer). Do I stop responding to fires? Affraid not, it has to fall back on the taxpayer..

i tell ya.. the more i think about it.. the more i wanna do this stuff myself.. or at least try anyway, if i get a chance to work heavy equipment, i wont have a whole lot of time to myself.. (part of the deal) but that leaves some anyway, make some in the basement or something.. as long as i dont sell any, i dont have to declare it as a business. when we had our old audi diesel years ago.. we considered it.. i am slowly becoming more ready.. lots of times the fuel filters clogging is beacuse biodiesel is a detergent, and cleans out all the deposits on the motor.passes it to the fuel filter, also you need diffrent hoses because biodiesel will eat through the lines. I think clear surgery type hoses work ok.

My neighbor has a '98ish TDi. First you are awakened by the awful sound of an engine that sounds like it's about to puke the rods out, then you see the cloud of black smoke blowing across the cul-de-sac like the monster in Lost, followed by a horrible smell. At least the mosquito population is dwindling!

:P

Again, that is the old diesel technology. The 01 - 03 diesels were much better, then when they went to the PD engines in 04 they got even quieter with less smoke. Fast forward to the 05 New Jetta and their 1.9L Turbo diesels and you couldn't even tell they were diesel without looking at the badge.

Diesel technology has changed alot since your neighbor's Jetta was born. The *only* thing inticing about his 98 is that it CAN run on full bio or be turned into a "greaser" and run on waste vegi oil. Talk about giving the oil companies the fickle finger of fate. That would be the way to do it!!!!

Just to follow-up with this. Said neighbor has finally let the old TDI die after a failed fuelpump was going to cost her $3K to fix.

She replaced it with a newer model (2007 I think). It's quieter, but still smokes and stinks. After sitting behind it at a stop light, I can honestly say, it doesn't need a badge to warn about the type of fuel it's burning.

get a 7.3l turbo ford diesel. tows good, rides good.. mostly reliable,(if its like ours, its old) gets decent mileage empty or loaded, if you have the room for it.. its a great truck.. can hold alllllll you want to hold in four door six foot bed trim.ours is only 2wd, great rig.Our truck gets better mileage then our old v6 explorer did. 4.0l HO v6 explorer, now 7.3l diesel turbo v8. 18 towing loaded, 20 empty.. big big truck that is decent. Also, you fit in at the fairgrounds real well.

As far as cars, we drive a 525i. not a 540is.. which is a car that i like..
a crx, and a wrx.. not something with major power, major fuel bill.
and a twelve year old truck.
