Good grief! A Tundra standard cab pickup with the optional 381 HP 5.7 Liter V8 runs the 1/4 mile with the same E.T. and trap speed as my 1990 Mustang 5.0.

That pickup truck runs the 0-60 and the 1/4 way faster than my 944 or 325Ci.

It says that they couldn't slalom because the stability control turns itself back on after being turned off.....does that really count as being turned off in the first place?

You got a problem with that? It doesn't sound very fast these days, but twenty years ago that was considered pretty good.

I'm just happy that Toyota has been concentrating all their resources on trucks and SUVs instead of silly sports cars. :?

No kidding. I can remember reading the Car and Driver road test of the Chevy Monza when the V8 was first offered in it. I think the car did 0-60 in 9.x seconds, and it was "fast" for a "new" car. The 1/4 mile was probably in the 17's on that thing! A "15-second car" was known to be a thing of the past excepting an "exotic". Heck, even when the 1976 turboCarrera hit the scene with a huge splash here in the USA, I think it did 0-60 in the mid-6's.

All you young'ins should be required to live the automotive world of the 1970s. It would create a profound respect for what we have today...along with the knowledge that it can all be taken away in a couple of short years. 1971-2 were brutal years for car fanatics. Something similar is probably coming at some point.

Are you saying it's time to get in line for the Prius GTS?

I'd prefer an Insight Type R myself.

My almost stock 1986 ASP champion 1974 Lotus had 113 advertised HP and 104 Torque (car weight about 1800 lbs with driver). Remember that HP numbers in those days were "inflated" compared to today's system. R&T said 1/4 mile in 17 seconds at 79.5 mph. Oh the good old days. That car probably won't beat a good HS car now. Actual 1/4 times/speeds for my stock 1977 DS winning 74 Datsun Z were actually a little quicker than the R&T times/speeds for the Lotus.

Art's world may be ending but keep in mind that all those years struggling with an old slow Mustang apparently hid his talents. Talk about sandbagging all those years. 2 top times overall in a borrowed STOCK class car that is extremely different from a Mustang. WOW.

I wasn't sandbagging. I was Vintage Racing!

Dick - Your Lotus may not have had great acceleration, but as I recall, you never slowed down for turns, so it all worked out OK. It was a really beautiful car and a pleasure to watch you drive it.

Somewhat apropos to the original topic, I'm surprised that Art didn't mention the historic anniversary yesterday:

Quote:
April 17, 1964: Mustang Rolls off Ford's Assembly Line
Ford introduced the Ford Mustang on the first day of the New York World's Fair in Flushing, Queens. The Mustang had been the brainchild of Lee Iacocca and his production team. The car was essentially a Ford Falcon with a new frame and body. The Mustang was so successfully marketed, thanks in part to its introduction at the World's Fair, that it became one of Ford's best-selling models of all time. Ford profits soared after the release of the Mustang. Another of Iacocca's Mustang-related innovations was a new strategy of marketing upgrade packages for the car. On this day in 1965, a year into the Mustang's lifetime, Ford introduced the GT Equipment Group as an option on the Mustang, creating the first Mustang GT. Iacocca commented on the success of the package, "People want economy so badly they don't care how much they pay for it." The base price for the Mustang was a skinny $2,368, but buyers purchased an average of $1,000 worth of options.

I am psyched to see Art doing so well. Just proves my point, you learn to drive a solid axle car fast, all others are easy :D
