I think I saw a post somewhere that finding a site at RDU was not going to happen. But here are some crazy RDU ideas...

I recently noticed that one or more of the overflow parking lots was totally empty. It may have even been closed so that you couldn't even park. I think the terra server aerial photos are older than some of the newer lots, but I think it is in the NE part of the airport here...

Ok, I don't know much about RDU layout. I thought they only had two parallel runways. But it looks like there is an active runway to the east (for smaller private planes?). On airnav.com this would be runway 14/32. But it looks like there is an older abandonded runway that connects to 14/32 that runs roughly North/South. Looks to be about 2000' x 100' or so. Hard to tell via the photo the condition of the runway. Maybe this is an option?

Thoughts and comments?

Another one. This is the GE Jet Engine part plant in RTP off of Miami Blvd. Not sure if it is still open or not.

You are right Richard, 14/32 is a small runway used mainly by private aircraft and the National Guard. As far as the parking lot that isn't being used, it is P & R 2 by the control tower. It has far too many light poles and islands to use, not to mention that part of it is the employee lot for the general aviation employees (you can see my car there monday through friday 0500 - 1300!) Also, the airport authority would NEVER sign off on a car event on airport property. Way too much liability for them to assume!

This is the Highway Patrol Training Site over in the Garner area.. nice site, road course and skid pad... but I am sure it is 0% accessable to us.

Why? I guess I look at it like this. The HP doesn't use it all the time. It already works for courses so it should meet our safety requirements. The cops will know where we are and know we aren't on the streets doing this. So what is wrong with asking the HP? We use Sanford and that is another training site for a government agency. I think it is worth asking. Maybe that could be the new night event site if it is booked on the weekends.

Maybe we should invite the Highway Patrol to join us in a little good-spirited autocross competition.

We could do a "Beat the Heat" event like they did in Charlotte a few years ago. Take the class winners and pit them against a HP Trooper on his course. Every driver that beats the Trooper's time gets a "get out of jail free" card.

No Lights, so no night event, I doubt the HP is going to let us on there, but like you say I guess it never hurts to ask.

hi all, anyone thought of augmenting the terra search servive with the united states geological survey site, usgs.gov, they may be able to locate big dirt areas for rally crosss or lots for auto crosss, it would be worth a look anyway....

oh well, just a tought, good hunting

I just happened to drive past that site today. The road running east-west just to the north of the site is Tryon Road. The north-south road just to the west is Hammond Road. It's a beautiful site - as I drove past I saw this sea of cones and had to pull over. Unfortunately it was one of the few times I didn't have my camera with me else I'd post pictures. I strongly recommend trying for this site - it would be perfect.

The aerial shot doesn't show it but there's a huge asphalt apron - almost as big as the black lake I'd guess.

Please, please - someone check this out.

Simon
