we use AVG free at the house and i purchased AVG for my server. seems to work well. if you set the update and scan schedule for times you are not on the system it is very unobtrusive.

my AVG says it scans e-mails. at the bottom of all email pages is a notation. does it not scan the attachment Wes?

I have also been using AVG free on both of my computers for about two years. Seems to work well and it's free on home systems.

I use the free cleaner Housecall http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
to sweep and clean my machines every so often. The definition files are up to the minute.
I had one virus that would prevent antivirus software from running, but Housecall has two different kernals, so if one doesn't work (crashes/locks/just sits there) try the other kernal. That's how I cleaned it.
It takes a while to sweep a lot of files, but you can specify which drives and folders to sweep, if you have a lot of files, start with the ones that are most likely to be where a virus or spyware might reside such as C:, anywhere you store downloads, emails, browser, temp internet files files first if you need to get back up and running in a shorter time, then do a complete scan overnight. Just check off and blow away everything and anything it finds.

Oh yah,
I just read an article where a number of the Chinese manufactured electronic gadgets such as electronic picture frames, mp3 players, even game consoles that plug into you computer have been found to have viruses in their firmware that are transfering to PCs as soon as you connect the device. They said it doesn't appear to be any sort of directed attack, but more a problem of poor worker oversight and quality control. The viruses are being uploaded from infected personal devices the workers are plugging into the companies networks and the products not being scanned for malware before shipping.
Electronic picture frames sold by WalMart and Target around Xmas were examples of infected products found.
