Just passing this on. A sad reminder why young folks need to go to driver's school(s) before being turned loose with such a car.

Asking about how to do high rev shifts several hours before getting sloshed underage is pretty good foreshadowing to the events that transpired.

M5DAL in that thread is a former Australian national rally champion, and he of course advised restraint, learning the car carefully, etc, then said that if he screwed up he'd be in the news....

That's soooo tragic.

It's a terrible reminder of what happened on the 264 & 440 overpass a couple of years ago with the RX8 and four high school young men, one of which was the younger brother of a good friend of mine.

If you read very far there, you'll see that a few of the posters knew the idiots who misunderstood when someone said M5's could "really fly."

It's sad that stuff like this has to happen repeatedly, but I don't have any sympathy. I'm just glad they didn't take out any innocent bystanders.

Oh, and did you know that John Travolta has a house there? And uh... John Travolta John Travolta John Travolta, just for good measure.

A drivers school may teach you how to drive a little better, but I doubt they teach the level of maturity required to understand mortality, responsibility, etc.

Kids just don't need to be driving such cars at all.

I'll agree with that. When I turned 18, I had saved up enough money that I wanted to trade in my Civic EX 4-dr (automatic) for something more sporty. I had a beautiful 1993 R1 RX-7 picked out that I could afford. My dad shot it down in a heartbeat. I ended up getting a 1996 Integra GS-R. I'm confident that that decision may be the reason i'm alive, cuz I did some really stupid stuff in that Integra. If I'd had the extra 85 hp on tap, I'm not sure I'd have been able to get myself out of it.

This is not to say that you can't get your kids a cool car, just don't get them something with 500 hp of temptation.

I have been in insurance for 23 years (started when I was 12) First as an adjuster now as an agent. I have seen my share of fatalities with kids. 100% have been in High Performance or Percieved High Performance Cars. I tell all my insd's to get their kids grandma's old car. I have never had a bad accident with a kid in 4dr accord. I tell them not to even get something that kids think looks fast (eclipse, 6cyl mustang etc.). Youth & testosterone are a lethal combination.

I would love to see a study of accident rates with kids that do AX, Bmw schools etc. I would hope that being in that atmosphere brings about maturity. Seeing people of all ages having fun responsibly with cars might help. Any way very sad for the families, those people on the Subaru forum are sick.

I agree with these statements 100%. Folks that do actively race recreationally have somewhat of a moral responsibility to represent their club in a safe manner on the road IMO and encourage others to get involved in organized motorsports. Save the crazy stuff for an environment that's safer and more conducive to speed.

As far as those Subaru guys, well, they are a bunch of jacka$$es and certainly don't represent the import community in a positive light. I read the entire 5-Series forum post that Wes provided and the two diferent tones certainly reflected two obvious age and maturity gaps.

Lastly, where is the parental responsibility in this tragic ending?

And FWIW, who cares about Travolta's affiliation with this tragedy? Not me. Leave Vincent Vega outta this... 8)

Well, I hope that my son will drive a car the way he drove the Kart last year at VIR.
We went there last year when my friend from Quebec came over. My son drove the Kart at moderate speed
going at his own rhythm. His fastest lap happened when he was following me. When I was trying to show him the line.
After a few laps of that, me and my friend race each other and we pass my son many time. He was just putt putting around the track.
having fun.

Kids need a good role model to teach them how to properly handle ANYTHING dangerous. My oldest is five and he's currently already getting started learning how to handle a gokart as well as a gun.

I can't find a good role model, though, so I'm just teaching him myself.

Part of the problem is that so many kids these days ride with parents who constantly try to violate the laws of physics (let alone traffic laws and laws of common courtesy) from their earliest rides in car seats. Kids know for a fact that they can do anything at least as well as their parents.
