I'll agree with that. When I turned 18, I had saved up enough money that I wanted to trade in my Civic EX 4-dr (automatic) for something more sporty. I had a beautiful 1993 R1 RX-7 picked out that I could afford. My dad shot it down in a heartbeat. I ended up getting a 1996 Integra GS-R. I'm confident that that decision may be the reason i'm alive, cuz I did some really stupid stuff in that Integra. If I'd had the extra 85 hp on tap, I'm not sure I'd have been able to get myself out of it.

This is not to say that you can't get your kids a cool car, just don't get them something with 500 hp of temptation.

Same here except it was a 1969 Mustang Fastback with a 429, high rise intake and dual four barrels and my Mom said HELL NO.

honda accord........ no power, nothinfast about it. 29 days later it was in a fence at the bottom of the hill.

my position is that IF i had horsepower i could have saved it.

and thats what im sticking with.

actually in SOME instances horsepower can be a safety feature.......

no-ones buying it about the accord tho

My "first" ride was my parents Chrysler Minivan when I turned 16. Took my drivers test with it. Thing smoked like crazy so I rarely drove it. Too embarassing for a teenager!!

The first vehicle I actually owned was an 84 Pontiac Fiero. 4cyl with a 4 speed. It was nimble, but could barely get out if it's own way in a straight line. I found it at a yard sale.

I guess it was easier turning 16 in 1975 when something like a Trans-Am had 165hp. I did get my license in my father's 1972 BMW Bavaria though which had 180hp. I already had a couple of years experience with dirt bikes and motocross racing at that point, so maybe that's why I had a profound respect for the physics of motorized travel (i.e. learned the old-fashion way...by crashing repeatedly and getting back on, lol). It was a natural transition to autocrossing that year where I slowly learned that motocross-style driving a car wasn't the fastest way around a course...this was in a Mercury (Ford of Germany) Capri with all of 110 hp.

Yeah, I got my license in 1976. It was the height of the Smokey and the Bandit craze. All the rich kids in town got a brand new Trans Am. Of course I got my mom's old 1964 Dodge Cornet Station Wagen. I was a big fan of European cars so of course I hated it, wanted a Spitfire more than anything in the world. I soon discovered that the Dodge 318 with out any smog crap would out run the new Trans Ams. I actually raced a Trans Am full of kids with my car full of kids down two parallel roads seperated by about 20 yds that intersected at a turn at the bottom a mountain. The Trans Am got a jump on me but I got up to him and never lifted and squealled around the turn and he went in behind me a spun off the road. Only the Grace of God kept us from being in the news like those kids. This was only a couple of months after three kids in our community had gotten killed trying to see how fast they could come down a mountain. 16 year old boys have no brains. or at least no blood in their brains.

I will never forget what my father told me when I asked if I could drive his 1969 Z/28 Camaro...."No, you will wreck it and kill yourself". Glad he had the right priorities car before child  So I stuck with my 65 Mustang convertible. Yes, I once drove Fords.

Ahh, so much makes since now. The 65 Mustang was the original chick car. Lee Iaccoca's team designed it to sell to the new market segment of woman in the work place. Primarily to the secretary set with the scarf blowing in the breeze as she drove with the top down. Now Jim races a big purple Camaro, hmm, what would a physicatrist say????

I love the internet, I'm short and wimpie and can talk total smack to guy that could totally kick my ... with out working up a sweat!

But I came to my senses when I was 18 and moved onto a 1969 GTO and then a 1970 Judge convertible when I was 20. Now what would a shrink say about driving a Judge convertible? Guess I needed the RamAir IV to make up for something :-)

I wanted my dad to help me with a TVR 1600cc Ford in the fiberglass body. He said no way. I drove the parents wood paneled Ford station wagon. (with the 429 in it).

My first car I bought was a 67 beetle (in 1979) w/68 taillights. Last one with a flat windshield and first 12Volt
