It really pisses me off that I have to pay to update my Garmin GPS, especially with the prices for new units dropping so much. Is there any way around this, short of buying another brand?

Not sure what you mean. Firmware updates have always been free, but major software updates usually aren't. That's pretty much the case with anyone, though. It costs them money to keep updating their maps with newer roads and such. *shrug* I've never needed to pay them to update software very often...minor updates have always been free.
