A friend has asked if there are any basic motorcycle courses offered in the area and for details of them. Does anyone know any details about the class done at the Sanford site? Any other courses in the area?

He is looking for a basic course - fundamentals, safety, etc. If you have the info on cost, contact info, or course content, it would be helpful. Thanks.

Without a doubt, this is what you want:

http://www.msf-usa.org/

That's what is taught at Sanford, I'm fairly certain. I wish ALL MOTORISTS had to take this course...at least the classroom portion (if you have no intention of riding a bike). It's great. Any motorcyclist riding around (I don't care how many miles you have) who hasn't taken this course should. Then take the advanced course. Then take the advanced course again every couple or three years.

I took the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course at Durham Tech and Jeanne took it at Wake Tech. It is the same course, so it comes down to scheduling and convenience. But they fill up pretty fast and I am not sure of the availability during the winter months.

It is a tough 3 days. You have classroom from 6 til 10 Friday evening. Then Saturday and Sunday you are there from 7 til 6 or so. But it is the best $120 you can spend.

I took the MSF course through Ray Price. It was more expensive, but the waiting period was shorter (the community college programs fill up fast). I learned a lot, but wound up not going down that path after getting my endorsement. They do their school at Walnut Creek and it's pretty challenging given how they have their Figure 8 box (it's camber challenging vs Sanford's flat pad).

another endorsement for the class

I took it, and really thought it was great, it taught me some things that have made me a better driver.

Now if I could just scratch together some money to afford a bike. . .

I took the MSF course several (OK, more than several) years ago at Garner Senior HS. As others have mentioned, I would highly recommend it- in fact it should be required for ANYONE who rides a motorcycle IMHO.

I have a really nice unrestored classic BMW bike, but I have not had it licensed/insured for a couple of years. Call me chicken, call me old, I just can't justify the risk vs. benefit of riding a bike on the public roads around the triangle area.

Let the rebuttals begin!!! ;)

negative. :D

I do have another one *almost* exactly like it, just not quite as nice. I'd consider selling that one for the right price.

BTW, it's a '75 R90s, Silver Smoke. (the one I plan to keep is a '74, also Silver Smoke).

I don't believe much in cars (or bikes) as investments, but this one is doing nothing but going up in value- and will likely continue to do so.

Bret

EDIT: clicky- http://www.mcmototech.com/R90S/r90smain.htm

The 74 is pretty much exactly like the first bike on that page, the 75 has some subtle differences, the biggest one is the front brake rotors are drilled on the 75 and solid on the 74.

He was at Barber not long ago and his bike got selected to be on a calendar.

Ditto on the course!! Also, full face helmet and riding jacket and pants. Dress to wreck not to ride!

Took the MSF basic course twice - first time was back when I was 15 or so and the bike was my first vehicle. I took it again after we moved to NC when I convinced Malia she should take the course.

Not only do I believe in this course, I think passengers should take it too. Malia never did go outside our neighborhood on our bikes after taking the course, but she became a much better passenger because of it!

Edit: Oh, and we found it was easier to get into the Community College class in whatever CC is in Smithfield - it's a bit more of a pain to commute, but we were able to get in within a month or two as I recall.

Apparently Wake Tech is holding MSF courses now. Both beginner and advanced. Here's the link to the catalogue.

Anders Green (former member some may not forget... ;-) ) recently took an MSF class in Durham and wrote a good report...

I'll take this opportunity to remind you riders out there that the DMV loves to accidentally drop your M endorsement when you renew your license. The last two times I've done mine I've almost walked out without realizing it was gone only to have to go get it printed again. Apparently they have to keep checking a box every time or something. *shrug*
