Once again comes to Rockingham Dragway this weekend.
This year features the return of Fuel Funnycar class to IHRA.
First round of Pro classes (Top Fuel dragster, Fuel Funnycar. Alchohol Funnycar, Pro Mod and Pro Stock) qualifying starts at 6PM Friday.
Second round is at 12 noon and the third and final round "Night of Fire" is at 6:00 on Sat.
Sportsman class eliminations are Sat between pro qualifying and Sun between pro class elimination rounds.
Tickets are available each day at the gate, and are a bargain for such a major racing event.
We will definitely be there on Saturday and likely on Sunday. PM me if you might want to meet up with us and get to meet some of the racers in person, including our good friend Mike Janis who currently is sitting second in points in Pro Mod.

First round qualifying results for Pro Mod:
Mike Janis #3 6.127 235+ MPH
Solidly qualified in the field, Mike will be trying to reset the world record or at least qualify # 1 in today's last 2 qualifying rounds to pick up the valuable bonus points that goes with each. He still has a mathmatical chance of winning his 3rd championship but Scotty Cannon Jr picking up 41 bonus points for making all the championship events with a run last night after Mike missed an event in Alberta is going to make it a steep uphill battle.
Scotty left the door open a crack last night by qualifying #16, last place to go into the eliminations and on the bubble to not make it into the field...
Rockingham is one of Mike's favorite tracks so it will be exciting if nothing else.

I ended up by bailing on yesterday because it looked like it was going to rain all day. Oh well.

Tomorrow should be fun.

Sat Pro Mod results:
Qual Round 2: Mike needs to qualify in front of Scott Cannon to keep his mathmatical championship hopes alive. Scotty runs first and posts a 6.04 to move into the provisional #1 qualifier spot. Mike answers back with a 6.02 to end the round and move back into the # 1 spot. One more round to go.
To still stay in the hunt Mike needs to qualify ahead of Cannon and set a new et record bettering Scott's 5.938 mark set last month, mike already holds the MPH mark at over 240 MPH. Conditions are about perfect when Promod comes to the line as the air is dry and cooling fast after a delay for a track cleanup. Mike Stawicki shows just how good it is mid round when he runs a 5.97 to temporarily move into #1. There are several other 6.0s run as well. Mike and Scott will make the last set of runs to close out qualifying. Mike's crew has set the car up to do the deed.
Mike gets lane choice over Scott.
Tree comes down and both cars head for the finish. Mike is ahead as they near the finish, suddenly Scott jumps ahead and crosses the line first with a 5.969 239 MPH. Mikes side of the scoreboard shows a 6.008 but only 210 MPH??? Something went wrong, the engine lost power right at the end of the run?
That puts Scott into a clinch for the championship barring any penalty points for breaking and oiling down the track on his first pass, but Mike can still win on Sunday from the #3 qualifier spot and post a moral victory if they can find what went wrong, he definitely has the strongest car.
We arrive at his hauler just as the car gets back, and watch as the crew swarms the car and starts pulling down the engine fearing they may have burned a piston or 8. They get the heads off and start pulling the pistons, but none show the significant damage they expected to see, just a little melting around the edges like a lean condition produces? Puzzled they start wondering what happened then to cause the engine to lose power so suddenly. Almost as an afterthought one of the crew asks where the fuel shutoff return spring went figuring someone may have disconnected it in the thrashing. Looking closer, the end loop from one end of the spring is still on the arm. The spring must have broken and fallen off allowing the fuel shutoff to vibrate closed. Mike and Mike Jr (his son and crew chief) rush to the computer to check the data. We hear a "oh FU**! from inside as the data confirms it, the fuel pressure went away just before the line.
A 30 cent spring cost him a shot at the championship!
"At least we know for sure what happened.." Mike told the crew. So they could go into Sunday's rounds knowing the tune on the engine was fine and not change anything but the blasted spring.

Well, that turned out to be ~ $75K spring!
Scotty was handed the 07 Championship in the first round when his competitor left before the tree was even activated, so he did not have to make a hard run with it's risk of a track oildown penalty, but got beat in the second round.
Mike had the last say tho when went he went on to win the whole event Putting an exclamation point on it with a 5.99 final run!
Congratulations Mike on finishing second in points and winning Rockingham.
It was just a shame that he didn't get outraced for the championship, it was just his decision not to tow 36 hrs each way to the Alberta event and thereby not get the 41 bonus points for 100% participation that lost it for him. He vows to not miss ANY events next year tho.
Due to a change in the rules on body style years allowed in Pro mod for 08, Mike has the Cobalt sold and will be building a new car with a replica of a 68 Firebird body for the 08 season. I was kidding with him that we will both be in a Pontiac for next year.
