Are you talking "real" or "pretend" practical. :) Buy a used, but in good condition Civic or Corolla. Of it you want to go "upscale", an Accord or Camry.

I guess that in selling my car and parting it out, that would want one car to play and one that would accomdate two kids and serve as a safe daily driver. The 5-series wagon caught my eye, but I could opt for an older 4-Runner or the like that seem to be reliable to begin with.

I did give some thought to a Protege5. It wouldn't be so drastically different from my 3, but at thier price points would afford me the ability to pic one up as well as the aforementioned Miata.

E46 3 series. little larger inside than the E36, more hp same great handling. as for 100k maintennance items, i beleive they are similar to E36 but probably not as severe as a 5 series. i will let you know in a year or so.

I have pretty much decided how this will play out. If the asking price of the Miata in question doesn't much exceed $4k then I should have enough to get another vehicle. I think ideally, I am now going to shoor for a 99-01 4Runner. They seem to be available in various trims with about 120K on the clock for anywhere from $8900 to about $11,500. Anybody reading this own or has owned one, please chime in.

They suffer from Head gasket problems don't they? Or was it fixed by then?

Jeb, you really are not that far off the price of a 2001 330i with 100k on the clock. i just picked one up with 92k for what you are looking at for the two vehicles. of course if you want to autoX, the miata would be the route to take.

They are nice trucks but look out for rear axle leakage ( )

My roomate bought one, his front brakes kept wearing out too quickly. Turns out the rear axle leaked all over the rear brakes causing the fronts to overwork themselves. It was a $700 fix.
