General Motors’ Pontiac Solstice and Saturn’s Sky both posted massive numbers out of the sales gates, but at least one of the two sports cars’ fortunes are flagging.
According to the New York Times, sales of the curvaceous Solstice have dropped 19 percent versus last year through the end of July, and GM suddenly has a glut of Pontiac-branded roadsters on its hands—nearly five months of inventory. Conversely, its under-the-skin twin, the Saturn Sky, continues to sell well, with a one-month inventory and an actual wait time for delivery.
So what’s going on here? Author Nick Bunkley seems to feel it’s a product of Saturn’s rising star in GM’s portfolio, and Pontiac’s status as a “damaged” brand. He also points out that the General is investing more into Saturn’s marketing efforts than Pontiac.
Editor’s Note: All of these things are likely factors, but there’s also the short shelf life of stylish convertibles to figure on (most sports cars have notoriously short life cycles), and the Solstice came out well in advance of the Sky. There’s also the not insignificant matter that GM pumps out nearly twice as many of these Pontiacs as it does Saturns, in large measure due to Saturn’s markedly smaller dealer network. With so many more Solstices plying America’s roads, fickle fashion buyers are probably less likely to buy them, as they don’t want to see themselves on every street corner.
Further, Bunkley notes that sales at Saturn are up 15 percent this year, but this strikes us as a bit misleading, as it fails to note that GM continues to expand the brand exponentially with new and/or revitalized models like the Outlook and Vue. The same is true for GMC. Pontiac, meanwhile, is waiting on critical new models like the G8.

Plus, uh, the Sky just looks better.

I still like the bumper sticker: "Solstice: The Fiero of the Future."

I made something better looking than the Soli this morning after a bran muffin and two cups of coffee.

Time for ANYONE in the market for one to go to your local friendly Pontiac dealer and ask "how badly do you want to move one of these -- I will write a check for $XXXXX today. That's how I got my Durango for $16k under sticker. Buy the unloved. Always.

I just finished a Six Sigma/Design for Operational Excellence class this week, and I gotta point out -- 1 month inventory and customers STILL HAVE TO WAIT for product?!? Hmm. That there is an indication of how deep the problems are at domestic manufacturers. If you can't pull a vehicle out of US inventory and deliver it to a customer in a week or so, well you're not going to be pleasing a lot of customers, are you?

Who owns the inventory? What does it cost to ship? What are the lost opportunity costs (profit on retail sale and trade-in sales, etc.) for the dealer who lets a car go to another dealer? Will buyers buy sight unseen?

I wonder how Volvo is going to actually deliver those hundreds/thousands of custom versions of the new C30 given the distance from the factory? Not exactly the same as custom ordering a Dell computer and getting it a couple of days later from Winston-Salem.

FYI I custom ordered all four Mustangs I've owned. One from Vietnam and the other three from University Ford so I obviously have not learned the "buy the unloved approach". Maybe that explains why I keep my cars so long . . . I cannot afford to sell often due to the way I buy them

I really wonder where they got their info from??? It sure doesn't jive with what the dealer's say or have on hand.
I just did a search on 08 Solstice base and GXP in inventory in eastern NC,
There wasn't a single dealer that had more than 2 base models and only Hendrick had 3 GXPs listed (I know one of those did not pass predelivery and is waiting for parts to arrive) Are they saying that the dealers can't sell more than 2 of each in 5 months? Orders are still on an allotment basis at all dealers with some having to wait months to order a presold Soli.
The 07 sales were phenominal even tho fall is a historically slow time for convertible sales so it's not surprising that sales might be down a bit from same period last year. The Sky was in VERY short supply last year so their sales being up is also no surprise. If the dealer had only one per month available to sell last year and he is able to get (and sell) two this year, that's a 100% increase in sales!
Statistics can be manipulated to prove anything if they don't give details!
I know Hendrick's traded or bought any and all leftover 07 Solis they could get from other dealers on the E coast at the end of the model year and sold virtually all of them at a premium over list. Dealer's are still asking and getting 2-5K over, and Pontiac has no sales incentives on 07 or 08 Solstices. In fact their website says limited availability on all Solstices thru the 08 model year. That sure doesn't jive with a 5 month inventory glut! I bought a Solstice as a race car, I am not trying to champion the breed, but that article is so far off base as to be laughable!

After '07 Solo Nationals, there will be even less demand for Z0k based GXP's... - AB

Saturn is actually looking like a decent car company these days. Between the Sky and all the Opel models they are rebadging, they've made a nice jump in product offerings the last year or two....

How easy is it to get parts for 5 or 10 or 15 year old GM rebadged cars from Europe (Opel) or Australia? Seems like US companies in general and GM in particular have a loooong habit of short term availability of their imports from overseas. Seems like this would make getting the traditional "dealer only" parts a problem in a relatively short time compared to other brands/models. Don't know, just wondering.

Compared to the current demand for crossfires?
Total Crossfires entered in DS at National Championships = 1...
Total # of Crossfires entered in ANY class? I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count.

I didn't think that this thread was about Chryslers. Guess that I was wrong.

Demand is created by supply Chuck, and in the case of the Crossfire the production has been ZERO for quite some time. Besides, this discussion isn't about the Crossfire, it's about the GXP and I'm saying that it's going to have a tough time at Nationals.

If you want some numbers for the game, the Crossfire has 2 open class wins for 2007 on the National Tour/Pro, and one has trophied in every event it has entered. What are the stats for the GXP cars in 2007?

Enough said. - AB

No, it is starting to become the usual public sniping back and forth that we all love to read.

I regularly see Solstices on dealer lots. Not a lot, but usually one or two sitting out in a prominent spot. Hardly ever see Skys on lots.
