Funny you should mention that. It's on my watch list. No way I'm buying it via eBay without seeing it first, and since I'm at the beach until tomorrow I can't do it. If it doesn't meet reserve (and things like this rarely do), I'll probably be in touch with him.

Sweet Donnie. I really love these cars and that whole era of sports cars.

I had the opputrunity to see one (the one with the eyebrow window) a few years ago up at VIR. Unfortunately, he didn't take it on course but it was still a beautiful site. IIRC it was owned by the guy who owns FCI. I may be wrong about that though. I do remember it was parked next to a real Ford GT40 and a Ferrari 333SP. Very nice line up. I'm sure I have pictures around here somewhere.

Matter of fact this is the car with the Ferrari's tail in the background.

Part of me being a Porsche fan was watching the 962s run at Mid-Ohio in person in the late 1980's. My dream garage includes a 962, 917 and 904. IIRC there are a few people making 917 clones and at least one 904 clone (Beck). I wonder when the first 962 clone is going to show up.

When I first started autocross back then a local guy (Henry Payne) who was/is a major Porsche enthusiast would bring out his real 904 (#66) and autocross it. At the time I had no idea how historic the car was.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Interesting links:

http://www.race-car-replicas.com/rcr917.html

http://www.kraftwerkz.net/

I may call the first one on Monday and see what's up. If you note the News section of the second, it appears they don't (and haven't for a while) have any cars for sale, but they are looking to sell the rights and tooling to make these in the US and Europe. I've sent an email, though I sort of get the feeling they may more or less be defunct. Hmm, perhaps it was RCR that bought the Kraftwerkz stuff.

Donnie,

Looks like there is some good information on this site.

Link to GT40s.com search for RCR-917

Excellent find, Todd. That forum has more info on the RCR cars than any other place I've found by far. Sounds like what I really want is a 917K from them with the monocoque chassis. I probably won't fit in an original chassis very well, and I really want to street register it anyway. Supposedly the monocoque version will be around $45k as a roller, too. Just add 993TT engine/tranny and go play. :)

So Donnie, if you do pull the trigger and get one of these, how would you have it painted? Would you go with a scheme of your own or one of the classic liveries?

The Gulf paint would be instantly recognizable...
Image

But the Kurzheck paint is nice...
Image

Green race cars are supposedly bad luck, but this version of the Kurzheck is nice...
Image

I am a fan of the Pink Pig, but that was a later version of the 917...
Image

This version of the Martini colors from 1970 is nice...
Image

My personal pick would be the traditional Martini colors...

What is sad is that the classic Gulf colors is starting to show up on all kinds of cars. Nothing against the cars, but this is just not right...

Hummer with Gulf livery...

Not much anyone can do about it, but I think the Gulf colors and scheme should only be on cars that originally carried them.

But if it was me...

I would either do the Gulf colors or the Martini Hippie car. Probably with the Martini winning out due to the above issue with everyone doing the Gulf scheme. A close third would be the 1970 Le Mans winning Red/White "Kurzheck" car.

I forgot to say that this is making me want to watch "Le Mans" again.

Agreed on the Gulf colors - as much as I love that color scheme, it is almost too obvious a choice.

The Martini hippie car or traditional Martini livery would be my picks.

Here's some other hippie variations:

Edit - just realized these are the long-tail cars, so not an exact fit for the body style.

I don't think I could do anything but Gulf, personally. And yeah, I've even seen a Spec Miata in the Gulf scheme. It wasn't bad. Now that Audi is pretty heinous. The Mini I sort of dig, though. You should only do it to a JCW car. Oh God, just shoot me now.
